Title: Krewe du Smoke
Post by: KyNola on April 24, 2011, 07:40:13 PM
Pat and Rachel are in da house! For the rest of you coming in the weather may be a little dicey on Wednesday but other than that it should be beautiful.  See ya soon!

Happy Easter.

Dang, I wish I was there!
I'm in SEVERE need of some good food, friends, and fun!

This ain't been a "good" month so far...

Kitchen is gonna be awsome, but one thing after another keeps slowing the project down..
(let's don't even mention the tired old guy doing almost all the work...)

It's April, and my accountant thinks an "S Class" is just a rounding error...
Makes me wonder what he would call a "stray bullet" (?)...

(PAT!!! SEND RICE!!!)

Storms keep dumping various tornado debris on my lawn that I can't keep cut because it's so wet out...
BUT --- No serious complaints there --- Our friends got hit by an F3 twister and lost all kinds of stuff.
I reckon we should count our blessings...  but...

Within the last 48 hours, my momma wrecked her car in Orlando, and wifie's car got smashed up in Kentucky (storm damage)...
Of course, then again, we need to count our blessings --- no one was hurt (in either incident).

Anyhow... Looking forward to heading that way for some RELIEF!!!!

Flying SWA out of what's left of Lambert...
What the worst that could happen?
It ain't like the roof could just tear off the plane, right?

Awrighten.
Hmm.

Gentle reminder for STC:  "Beer" in NOLA denotes an Abita product.  Please get it right before my arrival so as not to further embarrass yourself among your peers.

It's hard for me to watch all you guys 'clawing' your way to the big show while I'm just going to hop in the car for a 1.5 hour cruise.  ;D

I'll be pacing around the house watching the clock so I don't get there too early and have to find a place to park waiting for my room.....

ALTHOUGH, I could just leave early and drive up on the levee and munch out on Ka Honu sausage until time to check in watching the ships go by. ;D

Where we eating Wednesday night????

What he meant to say was "munch out on the andouille that I'm picking up for Ka Honu on my way into town."  If you're guilty of any other interpretation, hang your perverted head in shame.

Have fun everybody and don't forget others are watching and waiting on PICS.  ;D

Well the ones were allowed to see anyway!   ;)

I'm here but nobody was still up when I got in - good thing NOLA is a 24-hour town.  Had to go out all by myself.  I survived, got a few hours of sleep, and after I run a couple errands, will go looking through the dumpsters for the rest of them.

I don't care what that NePaS guy says, it didn't happen and, even if it did, that wasn't me and neither he or any of those so-called witnesses can prove it!

Photos?  There are photos?  Obvious fakes!  Everyone who knows anything knows I'm much better looking than that guy from Hawaii who keeps showing up using my name and sullying my reputation.

If it had happened, however, the one thing I'd say is that every one of those boys married up.  Way up.

Dang near 5 pounds of Andouille.   Ka Honu had sent enough money ahead for an extra  8-10 pounds of the stuff to be packaged up.

Well, we can't just let it go to waste, so Ron goes to work with my Swiss army knife.

(the other bar patrons were either very interested or quite terrified by this point)

Samples are handed out, and the portions are divvied up between Hal, KyNola and myself.

I carried them (along with a pile of other smoked goodies) to the Mississippi/TN border, where KyNola and I have bivouacked for the night with the wives.    That in itself is another very interesting/funny story....    ::)

...and then there was one.

Glad y'all liked the andouille.  Wayne definitely knows how to make that stuff.

The weather remains beautiful here.  I spent the day at JazzFest with Jeff Beck, Robert Plant, some other pickers, a bunch of great food and too many cute young things to keep track of (which is just as well; they don't want to follow me home anymore and if they did, SWMBO would not be amused).  More of the same today and tomorrow, then a break to rest up before the next round.

Anyway, as already noted, it was a great Krewe meeting; we should do it again next year (the week of April 22nd).

The Andouille was very good! --- waiting on "Squirt Freight" to get the rest here (along with my 500lb share of goodies from Rick!)
In the meantime, I've been snacking on Hawaiian Wasabi Macs -- Whoa...  Olfactory systems are all clear  ;D

Hey Pat --- where's the other 9000 pictures?

I'll get them up when we get home.    The top corner room here at the Drury Inn has an impossibly weak WiFi signal.

Sausage is iced down and piled back in the car.

Headed to Graceland for a quick visit...

I got to tour the smoker at Wayne Jacobs on the way home. It is an old school shack that has been used since 1950.

Cool!

Made it home in one piece.  Last night on MS/TN border turned out to be a very interesting, somewhat entertaining and down right frightening event at the local Applebee's.  I'll let Pat fill in the details later but I will give you this much.  At the local Applebee's in Horn Lake MS, when they post the dress code it just says "wear Kevlar".  Bail money was definitely needed but not for any of us. :o

Once I gather my wits about me and get settled I'll snap a few pics of all of the goodies Jan and I brought back, both from our buddies of the Krewe du Smoke and the local Rouse's Grocery in the Quarter.  We came back with a lot more than what we started down there with. :D

Ah I see. The only place I went when i visited the southern states was Winn-Dixie Grocery Store. Birds where flying around the store like a zoo. Was wondering how they kept their food safe with all that bird poop.  ???

OK, here we go.  The first pic is of smoked meats.
And then there was rubs and jerky mixes and spices.
And then we went to Rouse's Grocery in the Quarter.
I left out the crab chips and fried pork rinds because the light was bouncing off the sacks too bad.

This was just what Jan and I brought home.  Pat and Hal have a load to post on here too!

Again, all I can say is thanks to everyone who came to New Orleans.  Every person is represented in the pics above because every person provided something in those pics.  Plus I just noticed I failed to take a pic of all the different sauces that showed up at Krewe du Smoke.  That was another load!  Sorry, a little tired.

What an incredible bunch we have on the forum.

We rolled in around 8PM last night.    5.5 hours from Elvis' house to here.

The car was STUFFED.

Every square inch except for the front seats had something jammed in it.

And speaking of stuffed..  (and cured and dried and smoked)

There is much more out in the garage...   Case of CT, case (minus 1) of Cochon's Abita mustard, at least 7 bags of Meadow Creek BBQ rub, and much more in that pink cooler that I don't even remember.   And there are Utz chips and PA pretzels scattered all over the kitchen.

Survived the first weekend of JazzFest - awesome food & music.  Y'all should'a stuck around; the bon temps are definitely roullezing.  I have three days to recover before the next round - already have Cochon, Jacques Imo's, Bon Ton Cafe, and Bayona scheduled between coffee & beignets at DuMonde, a muffaletta at Central Grocery, and trips to Felix's for oysters.  Can you say "fat and cholesterol?"

While not nearly as "overstocked" as those of my fellow krewe members who had cars, I definitely have enough rubs, sauces, and andouille to last for the next year.  All I have left to buy is some Zatarain's mustard, Cajun Chef hot sauce, and turtles (you should pardon the expression) for SWMBO from Southern Candymakers.

Only one remains but the saga continues...

Wonderful pic's STC.  Thanks so much for sharing.  Your time and effort allows me, and probably many others to share in your obvious wonderful experience.  These great pic's bring back wonderful memories of my time in N.O. and the thoughts of fresh oysters, shrimp, crayfish and all the wonderful food available there, pardon me while I wipe my drool.

It's been a few years since we were in the Quarter, but all of the pictures are really good and we may have to make a trip down there again...it sure is nice to see friends get together and have a really good time..

I redistributed/vacbagged some of the jerky/sausage/sticks that Nepas sent home with Hal and I.   Piled in the freezer now until Hal and I can get together again to divvy up.   My gawd..

I need a bigger freezer..

Or I should say - Hal needs a bigger freezer.  1/2 that load and most of those pork bellies to the left of frame has his name on them.  ;)

I wuz thinking about all the fun we had in Nawlins today...
Walked around the block (where I'm currently doing some work downtown)..
There's a little specialty pub I walked by.

One of the neon signs in the window:  "ABITA BEER"
Awrighten.

Whoa! An Abita magnet in your neck of the woods? Love it.

Mrs RB has me on restriction. She said I had too much fun in Nawlins?? I don't remember having too much fun? Did I have too much fun? I thought I was on my best behavior, well except for the crazed les...ans story hugging up to Mrs RB at the Famous Door. Maybe it was her that had too much fun!! I'm sticking wit dat!

Our next stop is Red River NM for the "Blues and Brews Festival." Maybe I can have too much fun there.....

Oh wait. I have one more comp on May 21st, then it's "Blues and Brews."

I owe you guys a PM

HUH??
Last thing I remember...
I wuz telling you my idea about how we could pull in 7 figures a year, mostly just sitting on barstools in the Quarter and slurping up Abita and gumbo...
And you said, "I gotta go!  You're gonna CORRUPT me!"

If that ain't good behavior, then... whuuuuuuut is?

Now, don't y'all ask about that plan --- (some corrupt goofball might actually TRY it).
Awrighten.

Dinner tonight at Bon Ton Café - awesome turtle soup and even better crawfish dinner (Étouffée, Jambalaya, Louie, and omelet).  Gawd I love this town!

Just showed the missus the Jazz Festival page and she really wants to go next year ;D so you may have a couple of Canadians join in on the fun. The line up of performers at the Festival is very impressive. I think we would come down for one weekend of the festival and tack a few days on. And yes she knows that there would be a meeting of members from here. All I have to do is figure out how to get a mess of frozen Lox across the border and down to there. :D Now to start the research on were to stay, flights down from Vancouver, Bellingham or Seattle. I love planning stuff like this, gives me something to do at work ::)

Practice makes perfect.

Terrific lunch at Bayona today followed (after Marcia Ball at Wednesday in the Park) by Mae's Gumbo and fried oysters at Mother's (love them bivalves).  Still have to get to Drago's and Cochon but think I'll get it all done by Monday night.

OBTW, one of the Zatarain's demos at the Fest on Friday is "Barbecue Wild Hog" by the guys from the TV show, Swamp People. Gonna have to check that out.

Okay, it's over.  I (barely) made it through the last day of JazzFest yesterday and spent today in more relaxing pursuits.  Breakfast (eggs, grits, debris, and biscuit) at Mother's followed by a late lunch at Cochon (gumbo, boudin balls, head cheese, and cochon with smothered cabbage).  No one should be allowed to make food that good.  Then spent a (moderately profitable) afternoon/evening in the casino, had a last cup of Mother's gumbo, made my hotel reservations for next year, and now home to pack.  How the hell am I gonna carry all that andouille plus the stuff the Krewe spread around?

What a great time - we gotta try to do the Krewe thing again next year.  Aloha all - more when I get home.
