Title: 2015 Thanksgiving Turkey
Post by: Wildcat on November 19, 2015, 08:24:29 AM
Decided to try smoking a turkey using melted butter and Jan's rub. Jan's is great on other yard birds so I figure it will probably do as well on turkey. I plan to cook today, vacuum seal, freeze, and take it to Chattanooga for Thanksgiving. All previous turkeys have been rubbed with EVOO, salt, pepper, garlic, and onion. Here is the bird in the pooper along with the Amazing tube for extra smoke. Will smoke for 3 hours at 250 then bump temp to 350 until breast is 160 and leg is 180.

Looks good WC.  Let me know what you think about Jan's Rub on the turkey.

We decided to eat the wings last night and will take the rest of the bird on the road. As I suspected, the rub is good on Big Bird. I bet pheasant would be absolute heaven with Jan's.

Green Mountain Davy Crockett. A small pellet grill. Absolutely love its performance.

No issue in holding its temperature? May look into it for my next purchase if I ever upgrade my Bradley. Is it Electric?

It is electric. Temp control is rock solid. Obtains temp to over 500 F. 550 I think. Out of town this week so I can't verify the 550.

And not a bad price.  At least one retailer outside of eBay is selling them for under $350.

I would have preferred one of the larger ones, but I wanted something I could put in the RV. I can technically do that but it does not ride well with those stupid spring legs. Also it is heavy and and akward to load by yourself. I brace it well for travel on the times I take it with me. As far as smoking and grilling, it is perfect for beef and birds. Probably woul do great for butts as well, but that could get messy. Inever was happy on how birds came out in the Bradley. Everything else in the Bradley was fine so long as you wanted to cook at really low temps which is ideal on some things. GMG can also maintain 190 to 250 temps for lw and slow with almost instant recovery.
