Title: Price of brisket here and there
Post by: Barny on May 20, 2021, 06:32:00 PM
$50.00 Brisket (almost). First time I ever saw a brisket advertised in local major grocery stores  around here although they are a  very popular smoking meat in the states. Smokers are gradually getting moor popular here in Canada . It weighs 7.47 KG which works out to $3.39 a pound . How does that price compare with my USA friends .

Oh darn , I have forgotten how to easily post pictures in this site . I posted   the size of it across my 30" stove and a separate shot of the price and weight etc. . on my FB timeline .. . . I even put them into imgur and can't get them from there to here.

OK , after an hour and about 20 tries  I guess I will have to move on. , Sorry , I really liked  this site and it's members but I need to be able to post pictures easily like in other sites .

Another EDIT . Oh yes , Bradley has a FB group so after another 1/2 hour trying to get pictures in this thread I remembered about  Bradley's  FB group so I went there and posted both the pictures there  in about 2 seconds right off my PC  desktop

That is a huge brisket. In my area whole briskets are difficult to find, and when they are available the cost of brisket is unstable. The cost for brisket in my area can range from $2.89/lb. to over $7.50/lb.

The price variation is due to the grade of meat, the type of beef, and the store chain selling it. Walmart generally stocks whole briskets at around $2.89/lb., but they are select grade. That is the lowest grade of meat. It has less intermuscular fat, and generally much more surface fat than the other grades. At Sam's Club, when they have them, they sell Certified Angus Beef (CAB) prime grade for around $5.00/lb., but the price can jump up to around $7/lb.. Prime is the USDA highest grade. Supermarket chains like Shoprite, you are looking at $6.00/lb. to $7.00/lb, and it is rare that they will carry them.

$3.39/lb is a great price compared what they sell for in my area (St. Louis).  At my local store they have brisket flats for $8.79/lb.  A 7 lb brisket would be over $60.

Needless to say, I do not smoke briskets very often, maybe one every several years.

Hi MSK2193;

Welcome to the forum.

That is a great price for a prime grade brisket. In my area, right now that price is close to the costs of St. Louis spare ribs.

I believe AAA is the Canadian equivalent to what we call choice grade here in the states. It's rated by how much intermuscular fat/marbling the meat has. The more marbling the higher the grade. Choice is the standard grade one can purchase in the supermarkets. It's a good grade. Select grade is our lowest grade of beef.

That's the one but if I had to post it gigantic like that I would not post it at all . Believe it or not there are still some in my area on dialup service. It would take an hour to load that and then have to scroll vertical and horizontal to see it .

I downsized it a bit and saved it to Google Photos.

Check again - I just moved it to another host site.

Also, my local store is starting their holiday weekend sales.  I was in there today and found briskets listed for too tempting a price to pass up so I bought a 14 lb one. These are normally $8.79/lb.

Thanks. I can now see all pictures.

That is a real good price for CAB. In my area the price of beef and pork; especially brisket and ribs continue to climb. I had to buy spare ribs; St. Louis cut for a Memorial Day party. The only place that had them were BJ's and Costco. I had to bite the bullet and buy them at $3.69/lb. Prior to this the highest price I've ever paid was $2.30/lb., and that was during the time when a virus was decimating pig herds.
