Title: Smoked Brat Question
Post by: David6340 on August 19, 2004, 06:35:47 AM
Can anybody give me feedback on smoking fresh brats? How long, temp. and best type of wood? I thought I would throw some on with a turkey breast I'm smoking.

David,

As long as they're not those Johnsonville trash, 2-3 hrs should make you a fine meal.

Ya think next time I check into a hotel & they ask "Smoking or Non?" they would mind?

I thought I saw a post, although I've been unable to find it, that said while brats or any fresh sausage taste great out of the BS, they don't look the greatest. Is there any truth to that? Also, would I put the brats on the top rack and the turkey breast below? Thanks.

100% correct. If I were forced at gunpoint to eat a dog turd, I'd pick the one that had been in the Bradley for a few hours. I just choose to not eat dog turds![:D]

Usinger's on the other hand ROCK! I just wish I could get them here. Thank God I have family in Chicago & can stock up. They're a pretty big outfit, but still retain the old-world quality & taste.

Johnsonvilles are to bratwurst what Kroger brand pop is to Pepsi. Cheap & flavorless.[xx(]

As far as looks go, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I don't think they look that bad and once you taste them it won't matter. If anybody ever criticized the look & didn't want to try them, they wouldn't be invited back to my house!

Brats on top of turkey work for me. The fat will drip down & give the turkey an added flavor. "It's a pork fat thing!"

After the butter and onions have touched down on top of the bun, I'm not looking for beauty at that point.

Hi David. FYI. Johnsonville Brats are made in Johnsonville, WI (not much of a town, pretty much just the brat factory, a few farms, and of course a tavern or two). I'm not actually sure if this is really a town as they are (mailing address)listed as Sheboygan Falls, but I believe I saw a sign proclaiming Johnsonville. If this is officially a town it is unincorporated and doesn't have it's own mail zip so uses Sheboygan Falls similar to where our new cabin is in Oulu, WI which the mailing addresses for that "town" are Iron River or Brule. I'm from Fond du Lac, WI. Johnsonville is probably about 30 - 40 miles from me. I know I went to a wedding reception that was near there once a few years back.

So surely you know them to be the step above an Oscar Meyer hotdog that they are. Thousands upon thousands of better brats reside within your state borders, as well as a lot of other good stuff.

Well, except for those goofy triangle-shaped hats you folks wear to the Bears' games![:D][:D]

Excuse my Canadian ignorance here, but I'm guessing that WI is Wisconsin which would make those Packer hats. The triangle is a wedge of cheese, which I thought was pretty stupid as well...until last Feb, when I bought my Bradley. Now the GB fans are way smart in my books, because those are SMOKEDCheeseheads[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]
