Title: DBS in Garage Update
Post by: Mr Walleye on January 21, 2007, 06:25:56 PM
I spent the morning updating my DBS in my garage. I decided to install a shelf instead of the cart I was using. Once I had the 48" x 24" shelf built I decided to cover it with some material that is used for backaplashes in restaurants. Next I decided I would slide the DBS over to the far left of the shelf so I had to design an offset for the rangehood  In the afternoon I did the chichen wraps and everything worked great. Here are some pictures.

Here is a couple that show where I located it in my garage. You can just see it peeking over the boat.

Totally sweet setup.  Do you find the aroma (not during smoking) of having the box in your garage overpowering at all?  I store the cold smoke box (cardboard with a dryer vent taped to it) in the garage and it is very evident that a source is in there.

Not at all Gizmo. I close the vent on the top of the box and put the cover on it, that's it! The garage is 900 sq ft with infloor heat and has vehicles in and out several times a day as well. It could be that your cardboard box you use for cold smoking "breathes".

Come to think of it, having the cover on the BS does do a nice job of aroma retention.  I never notice an aroma when I walk by it (although it is out side).  I also suspect the cardboard absorbs a lot hench your "breathes". :D

Mr. Walleye,

Very nice setup! Does it vent out the side of the garage?

Looks a little too clean! Need to get some pucks on that baby.....

Arcs

I mounted a range hood above it which is direct vented outside. works very well. I think I have around 15 or so smokes since setting it up in the garage. You can see the bottom of the range hood is white and clean which means my venting system is working as planned.  ;D

Gizmo

I should have used spell check.  ::)

NICE! ;)  Fish go straight from the boat to the smoker.  That is what I call fresh! :D

O,
Yah can't go ice fishing in a boat.  The ice makes it tip over on its side.  Oh, yah, a couple 12 packs and you wouldn't notice though.  ;D

Thanks Owrstrich

Ice fishing gear is to the left of the blue car in the photo!

"everytime i go ice fishing i catch a 12 pack..."
At least you don't get skunked!  ;D

Well, I probably wouldn't notice.  If it weren't for spell check, no one would be able to read my messages.  Ah, actually, I was blaming my bad spelling these days on spell check.  I use to do pretty good util a reliance on the automated process.

Very nice Mr. Walleye. Maybe a hole immediately under the generator to connect an elbow into the tower when you move the generator to the cold smoke box (I dont see yet) right under the shelf?

Have you puzzled anymore about the cold smoke set up?

Definitely West Coast! I just gotta get my but in gear!

I just haven't come up with the box yet. I have stainless steel on my brain. I have a friend who has some old stainless steel vents from a restaurant. I just haven't decided if I want to tackle building one using this. It would be alot nicer if I could just find one that was usable as is.  ::)

On another note I have everything ordered for the PID. I probably won't see it for a week or two yet though. Our pony express is really slow!

You have a couple of pretty fun projects lined up.  You have a very cool smoke set up, the addition of the cold smoke chamber is going to have you "setten purty"

Will be interesting to PID a DBS. I guess you just unplug the tower from the generator and plug the tower into the PID for control? All the displays on the Bradley will still work.

It will be real interesting to have control based on temp of the air vs the temp of the back of the tower.  Should be an awesome  :-* set-up 8)

Thanks West Coast. That is exactly the way I had planned to hook it up.
I don't see why it won't work great! At least I hope so. I'll keep you posted once I get everything and get it put together.

Thanks Mr Walleye...great pics...let me ask you though....do you find that the hood fan vents enough when you open the smoker door? The smoke seems to just roll out and this is what I am worried about...

If I open the door while the smoke generator is doing it's magic you do get smoke rolling out. For the most part the range  hood does remove it because the smoke just rises up to it. I guess one point I would make would be during the smoke process I usually try not to open the door at all. Even before it was in my garage I always tried to open the door as limited as possible. In my garage during the use of my BS I can smell it but it is not "smokey" in the garage. I have been very happy with my set up simply because I can totally take the wind and weather out of the equation altogether.

Great set up Mike, i've got the economy version, my BS sits on my workbench in the garage, and i open the door and window for ventilation  :P.

My garage smells just like a smokhouse nowdays, but i don't mind the smell, it always makes me hungry! ;D
I seem to smoke inside the garage a lot more now, even when the weather is good, just seems so convenient  ;D, i want to do a set up like yours when i get time, you have the perfect scenario there i'd say, very nice indeed  ;)
