Title: Pumpkin Seeds
Post by: whitetailfan on October 29, 2004, 09:51:00 PM
What does eveyone think?  Good idea/bad idea...
I'm carving up a Jack o' lantern (no relation to Bassman) tonight and we usually keep some seeds and roast them in the oven with seasoning salt...then it hits me, what would they taste like smoked[?]

Any information about past experiences or thoughts on technique would be well received.

There isn't a bunch of info here about making nuts which is the technique I was going to follos.  Apparently some people punch holes in an aluminum roaster, or use Al Foil, some use cheesecloth on the rack...

Hallowe'en may become one of my new favorite times of year.

I did some almonds a few weeks ago that turned out pretty good.  I would think pumpkin seeds would be about the same just less time.

I've done "out-of-the-can" Planter's cashews for about 1 & 1/2 hours & they were tasty-fine. Better warm, fresh out of the smoker, though. The leftovers tasted kind of "ashtray-ish" after being in a ziplock overnight. Maybe hickory isn't the right wood?

I went to the local Lowe's & found some stainless screen door replacement material & cut to fit to the racks. It will form-fit to the sides if you cut it a little large.

I'm liking the pumpkin seed idea WTF![:p]

Ya think next time I check into a hotel & they ask "Smoking or Non?" they would mind?

White,

I found this, take it for what is worth.

<font color="blue">"I just carved a Jack O'Lantern with my 8-yr. old son and saved a few of the biggest seeds to plant our pumpkin patch for next year. I dusted the rest of the seeds with a spicy BBQ rub and then popped it into the microwave on defrost for 20 minutes or so to slowly dry out and roast the seeds. When I was a kid, my father would coat the seeds with La Victoria Salsa Jalapeno (very hot stuff) and then toast the seeds in a cast iron skillet. They were so good I couldn't stop eating them. Between the hot sauce and roughage, I suffered the consequences the next day." </font id="blue">
