Title: Help wanted from New Yorkers!
Post by: manxman on April 17, 2008, 12:02:34 PM
May seem like an odd request but I have just been for a walk on the beach on a wet and miserable evening here on the Isle of Man, an island situated midway between Ireland and England and several thousand miles away from Long Island, New York!

I have found a "message in a bottle" which looks very genuine and appears to have been thrown in the sea off Long Island on Christmas Day 2007 and turned up on this side of the pond nearly 4 months later in a coke bottle.

Without giving exact details away the address is given as Radcliff Drive, East Norwich, N.Y. 11732

Before I go to the bother of replying could anyone in that area tell me whether the place actually exists!!

Many thanks.  :)

Manx,

According to mapquest, there is a Radcliffe Dr in East Norwich, NY.  Be sure to let me know how it turns out.....it has the beginings of a great Kevin Costner film  :P

Manx, That is a totally awesome find and most probably wouldn't have picked it up in the first place.
Probably should keep the tosser of the bottle's identity a secret.  The polution police would probably throw them in jail for littering the ocean.  Of course you would get a medal for cleaning it up.   :D

QuoteWet and miserable evening in the Isle of Man.......impossible, lovely place

It is the most lovely place, just that we have had more than our fair share of wet, windy and miserable recently!! Nice that you are a fan yul. ;) :D

I now have a cunning plan to get pucks for my B.S carriage free from the U.S, they can be thrown in the sea off Long Island and turn up on my door step some 3 months later! Just have to plan well ahead and make sure they are well vacuum sealed!  ;) ::) ;D

Quoteprobably wouldn't have picked it up in the first place.

Beachcombing is one of my favourite pastimes, it is amazing what turns up and past finds have included old world war II mines, part of an RAF sonar device that helicopters dip in the sea to look for submarines and a corpse!! (didn't take that home!!)  :o

I hope you didn't take the mines home either.  Wouldn't want to miss ya Manx.   ;)

Nah, the ones I found were always ones that had been defused. Occasionally a local trawler would pick up a live one in the nets!  :o

Presume "poop" is the same as "skeet" around here ...... gossip!?  ;) :D

No real news yet, I have sent off a letter with a bit of info about the Isle of Man together with my address and email address and hope for a reply in the next couple of weeks.  Just hope it's not some "bunny boiler" ;D ::) :o

There was a telephone number but part of it is obliterated.

Will keep you posted......... chicks are obviously the same the world over!!  :D :D

For those of you that asked for the outcome of this tale this is the email I got from "Natalie in Long Island", the bottom line is that the note is genuine!!

                                        **************************

Hello Paul,

This very amazing, I just got back from Europe my self, I was in Greece. I had a lot of mail to go through, and I saw your envelope, I probably received it earlier, but I was away, so this is what happened!!

I have to say- I was very surprised when I saw a letter from Europe in my mailbox!!  I could not understand who it could be from??? The when I opened it and read it! I  That is truly amazing that you found my" message in a bottle" !! I was so surprised, and how organized you were, with the map, and a copy of my  actual note- WOW!! I told my friends, and they couldn't believe it as well, and then I called my daughter Lexy,(she was at her Dad's) and she was so happy, she "wants to go there and meet you"!! Her reaction was very cute.
This is what happened, Lexy and I were taking a walk on the beach, in Long Island,  close to Jones Beach, it is in the South Shore .I live on the N. Shore .So we saw an old bottle and decided to write something in it and send it into the ocean .I can't believe the old bottle made it!! Then I found - I think it was make up- because I could not find a pen- that is why it is soo messy, and I wrote, then we threw it onto the water. I didn't really think anyone would ever get it, so I wrote very simple, but to the point. We actually wrote 2, because we were so excited, we love to do things like that- adventurous!! For some reason, it just intrigues me that someone could find a letter from us, years from now, or months, and look! It happened!!  Please say hello to your boys, and tell them- yes!! It is a genuine"message in a bottle"!! We hope to hear back from you- Paul- are you the actual one who found it?? Or did your boys find it?? All the best to you.

                                                               NATALIE

                          **********************************************

I reckon the distance involved was around 3500 miles.......... amazing!!

Thanks for the follow up. This is amazing, but now I'm curious as to when she put the bottle in the ocean.  It would be interesting to know if it tooks days, months or years.

Againg, thanks for the feed back.

QuoteIt would be interesting to know if it tooks days, months or years.

It was put in the sea on Christmas Day 2007, by my estimation it took about 14 weeks +/- a couple of weeks to travel the 3500 miles "as the crow flies" or about 1.5 mph!!  ::)

I would imagine it has probably travelled a fair bit more than the most direct route though. The plastic coke bottle was weighed down with a small stone, it would be a combination of current and wind that bought it to our shores.

Our prevaling winds are south westerly and New York is roughly south west of us. Not sure about the currents though?

You should hire a screenwriter and make this into a movie. :)

Big decision is who should play the lead role........... George Clooney? Tom Cruise? Shrek? ;) :D

An even bigger decision is choice of leading lady!!  ::) 8) ;D

QuoteDoes it appear to be a recent photo?

Yes, but I did use a bit of poetic licence in the previous post in that the pic was of her and her 10 year old daughter (who my 10 year old son thinks is lovely!), the swimming costume was not what you would call skimpy and the pic was taken by her partner!  ::) ::)

Joking apart we have had a few nice email exchanges and it is strange to think it all started from a message in a bottle crossing the pond! My two young lads are fascinated by it all.  :)
