Title: What does your handle mean?
Post by: car54 on July 23, 2008, 01:07:57 PM
For years I have wondered why people choose the user names and what they mean.

Here is my reason.

I used to race open wheel cars on road tracks not ovals. My car # was 54. One race I was really hooked up,at least for a while. I was approaching a turn at about 110 miles per hour. I was well on my way to a track record when my tires broke loose. That's a nice way of saying I spun out. I went into a swampy run off area with tall  willows and no one could find me because I was in very far. They kept on asking," Where are you?". That reminded me of the old TV show theme song Car 54 where are you? That is my I am CAR 54.

HCT= Here Comes Troubles. Troubles is my first black lab, my true brother of my heart. Back on december 22 of 1998 Troubles came into my families life, that night he suffered uncontrollable seizures throughout the night. Brought him to the vet in the morning and he found nothing wrong. Contacted his breeder and he said he would refund my money, just bring him back. Couldn't do it knowing what the breeder would do.
9 days later, on Christmas morning, I was rushed by abulance to the hospital with my second bout of meningitis.  3 days later when I regained consciousness my daughter said she found the name for the new puppy. Troubles it was and Troubles definately lives up to his name.

I'm Bob Cratchet's son from the Dicken's classic.....oops, I mean I had a hit song out with my falsetto voice called "Tiptoe Thru the Tulips"....okay, enough fooling around, here comes the real deal.

In '94 I started driving a Dirt Race Car at a local track.  Second night out, I ended up at a local bar talking with the track announcer and he wanted a nickname for me.  We went through my high school nicknames, one of which was given to me by the Guidance Counselor, and that was "Tiny".  I think because I'm a little bit larger than yer average bear, but not sure.  So, since my given name is Tim, and the first couple of nights I raced, I spent a bit of time doing offtrack excursions...tiptoeing thru the tulips....my new nickname became Tiny Tim.

In 1995 I started gaming Mechwarrior 2 online. I was 45 years old then. At that time in that game most were kids, so the name Oldman sounded right for me. A couple of years back I shortened it to Olds. (I still game some and now at 58 the name Olds really fits.)

Gizmo was the name of our first dog.  We rescued the dog from a family and they had already given it the name and not wanting to confuse the dog kept it.  Since I have always tinkered on "gizmos", mostly electronics and computers, I thought it would work here since food is now a tinkering avenue as well.  Smokers, grills, temp probes, screens, etc. are all gizmos as well.   :)

Short for Kummok'quiviokta, actually a N. Cheyenne name given to me by a Pit River Piute back in days of my youth. Roughly translated, it means "he who walks with wooden legs", or legs that don't wear out, aka "good walker". We did LOTS of walking at the ranch where I grew up....... I miss walking with him and listening to his stories, and the name sticks as a reminder of the good man he was.

Wife started calling me Sherlock when the kids were growing up. When they would do something and I didn't know who was responsible I would question her, after a while she would say, "You figure it out sherlock". Now, she just says that I am not satisfied unless I know every last detail. She has been known to fling around the word "anal".

Many years ago...when I was in school there was a guy who always knew everything...even when he didn't.  It got very annoying to me and a few friends so we decided to do a little test.  We each came up with a "word" to use in a sentence with him and see what his response was.  I looked around the room and saw an old heater/ac in the corner with a big plate on it that said "Modine" and I used the word with him.

As expected, he took the bait as well as one of the other two words.  So, I took "mrmodine" as kind of a inside joke pet name.  Been using it for years.

Aces and Eights - the Deadman's Hand.  And no i don't have a death wish!

We used to live near Deadwood South Dakota.  During the gold rush in the late 1800's Deadwood's population increased with miners and folks of ill repute.  Wild Bill Hickok enjoyed the town and decided it was easier to take money from miners at the poker table rather than digging it out of the ground.  On day he went into Saloon Number 10 to play poker, but the only seat had his back to the door - he sat and played anyway.  Jack McCall came into the Saloon and saw Wild Bill.  Jack had some grudge against Wild Bill and shot him in the back of the head.  Wild Bill held a pair of aces and a pair of eights - the kicker is unknown but though to be a nine or a queen.  Jack McCall was captured and acquitted on a technicality and fled the area.  He was later tracked down, re-tried and hanged for the murder.

Anyway, i took this handle because of the local (at the time!) lore and use it on several forums.

When I was pledging a fraternity back in college . . . what a way to start . . . in my pledge class we were all given
nick names.  The night that it happened, we were having a party and it was my turn to spin the music -->
So I became (and was assigned the nick name)  DJ Scotty-G.  The next week had an event at the on campus movie theater where I was the manager and I was on stage making some intros/announcements.  A few Brothers in the audience changed my nick name to MC Scotty-G.  At graduation, my pledge class said I was now Mr. Scotty-G  :D

When I joined this group, thought to use the same name (Scotty-G) - rather naustalgic but both areas have good people and bring fun into my life.  ;D

Kind of an inside joke.  Back in the early 90's I took a required speech class in order to complete a degree.  Had to give an explanatory speech.  Tobacco smokers were getting a lot of heat at the time so I started my speech by asking how many people in the class were smokers.  Got a few to raise their hands then told the class that I would turn them all into smokers by the end of my speech.  Explained how to smoke a chicken and handed out samples, got an A+.  Stuck with the name, though we have thought about twosmokers or threesmokers (with the little one).

I have lived in Nebraska my whole life, and about all there is for sports in the state is Nebraska football. The team colors are Red and White and the team is often refered to as the Big Red. following them is one of my passions along with smoking, so it made sense to be Big Red Smoker. Hasn't been a lot to cheer about around here since our last national championship in '97.  Hopefully we can get back to that level soon.

Kummock,

Great looking bike. 3 weeks ago I took my grandson to the newly opened Harley- Davidson museum in Milwaukee. It was enjoyable and it showed the history and development of the HD. They had a wall with all the different engines that they had made. It was more diverse then you would think. They made an opposed twin, square 4 , V4 and water cooled engines. They also had celebrity and customized bikes there. It was worth the $16.00 to get in. That bike would fit in the museum!

Hey Kummok, thats one classic panhead! You don't see to many of them around anymore. Seeing that bike reminds me of HD's 100th anniversary when I was out riding and I stopped at a gas station to refuel and and older fellar stopped at the same time. He was coming back from the big HD event and rode all the way from Alaska on an old panhead like that! He had to ride through dirt and snow just to get here. Here I am living in Wisconsin and never even went to the 100th anniversary. It was fun just to sit and talk with him a little since I was going to Alaska on my honeymoon. I can't wait to go back and do some more Halibut fishing. Never got to do any Salmon fishing though. :'(

I ride a cherry 77 Yamaha 500 XT "Thumper" right now that is kick start only, Olds...it'll do the same thing if the cam position is exactly right when you kick 'er over! :o  Fortunately I was raised with and Indian Scout and Chief and learned about the spark retard RIGHT away!

For you panhead lovers....Dad built that thing as a basket case of parts. I believe that it is a 49 frame/engine/trans w/ a 50 glider front end. He hand painted 49 coats of enamel that you see on it in the pic. In about 2003 or 4 he asked me if I wanted it. Being "project rich" and not really in love w/ HDs, I declined. We subsequently held an interview with a local airplane builder who had expressed a very strong desire to have it, to see if he was "worthy". He definitely was! Great guy who brought it back to life and rode it up to show Dad on the day the pic was taken. Since then, he's done miracles to the bike and will likely be buried with it, he loves it so much. The really cool thing that he did was ride it (in the rain!) to Dad's memorial service last year and park it in front of the church with Dad's old leathers (which I still have) draped over it..... He is indeed "worthy" to have it!  ;)

Doggone, I love that mask GB29! If I could figure out how to get it done up here, I'd have to use your theme on my sled helmet....just might scare away the occasional insomniac Grizzly!!

My educational background is wildlife biology.  I absolutely love hunting, fishing, being outdoors.  The day I joined the forum I had just had the hardest day hunting ever (but most rewarding).  We limited out on ducks (2 of us) in 15 minutes.  But, it was colder than a witch's you know what that day.  I had to push a boat about 3/4 of a mile through 3 inches of ice while the water was just deep enough to get over my waders.  On top of that, we had the boat full of decoys, a buddy that went upwards of 350 pounds and his dog that weighed 105 pound and mine that weighed 60 pounds.  Shot the birds in 15 minutes time and then had to push the boat back to the car through the ice.  When all was said and done, I could barely walk but my buddy said the steam was coming off of me like a Smoking Duck.  So, I decided to use it here.

Well I thought I would get creative.

I have some Mohawk Indian in my lineage so I thought I would use the Mohawk word for smoking as my screen name.

Needless to say, I have a hell of a time remembering how to spell it and the accent on the "e" makes things interesting as well. If I happen to lose my forum cookie then It's a game on trying to get back in.

Anyway, that's my story
