Title: has anyone tried smoking parmesan cheese?

Smoked some cheddar this last weekend.  Has anyone tried smoking the harder cheeses like reggiano parmesan and have some tips to share?

I haven't tried it, but I suspect you would be 'gilding the lily' by trying this.

Parmesan cheese is 'salt and pepper' to Italian food, and I don't think an extra layer of flavour would make it any better. Different, yes: better, probably not.

Also, unless you know an Italian who visits Italy, its very expensive stuff (I used to live next door to an Italian woman, so I used to get huge pieces of it for next to nothing  ;D)

i did this. it reduced the awesomeness of a nice chunk of regiano... the flavours conflict more than they colaborate. i don't recommend it.
