Title: ICE STORM!!!!
Post by: KyNola on January 26, 2009, 08:00:44 PM
You  know it's not going to be good when Jim Cantore with The Weather Channel comes to your town to report on the weather conditions LIVE!!!  He is just a few blocks away from my house reporting the ice storm that is coming right through us.  It's not all that cold, 27 F and that's not good for freezing rain.  Some of the weather computer models are saying 2 inches of ice and then snow tomorrow evening.  Ice storms here are devastating, power outages pretty much guaranteed.  Not a problem for me as I have gas logs to heat the house, a gas stove to cook and a freezer full of smoked goodies to eat but it can be really tough on some folks as we truly aren't equipped for this kind of weather.

I know a bunch of you have much worse weather conditions as a regular winter day but in Paducah KY, not so much. >:(

We'll be fine but I'll bet you you can't find a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk in a grocery around here.  :D  :D

Kynola, I am a midwest guy before moving to Ca, I have never heard of ice storms in Ky. I have friends in Galscow, and Bowling Green. Is this common?

Ouch!  Good Luck KyNola.

Ice storms are ice storms! They are nasty!

Our winters are nasty cold sometimes... lots of blizzards and blowing snow but usually no ice storms, although we do get freezing rain.

Glad ya got things ready and wish you all the luck.  ;)

Keep us posted.

SS,
Looks like this is pretty much going to blanket KY.  Bowling Green is definitely going to be impacted.  I'm within an hour or so of BG.  Glasgow will be whacked as well.  Ice storms are somewhat rare but have happened more frequently over the last few years.  I'm fairly certain it's Al Gore's fault.

Thanks Mike, we'll be fine.

Stuck my head out a few minutes ago.  It is absolutely pouring down ice, not pouring down rain.  Amazing.

Take care KY. I've been through a few ice storms myself. Not two inches of ice!
Hope the power stays on although if you get that much ice it will be unlikely.

That storm is supposed to begin impacting us tonight and into tomorrow, I think it is supposed to be all snow, lucky for us..... another 6-8", but thats a lot better than 2" of ice.

You described it as coming down as ice, so it sounds more like sleet to me. If you are talking about freezing rain, and not sleet; then 1/2" of freezing rain can be devastating. Just before Christmas we had an ice storm, and the areas that got 1/4" to 1/2" lost power for several days, due to downed power lines over a massive area. I hope that you and your state are spared the problems that come with freezing rain.

Take care KyNola!  Ice storms can be awful.  Give me snow anyday.

I guess I better watch the weather based on HCT's post.  I thought we were getting snow here but then the weather can be very different between where HCT & I are located even though we are  probably only an hour apart.

Keep safe and warm Kynola!
Hopefully all of the warm thoughts we send you will help melt the ice!
Our area had an ice storm in 1996 that is still refered to around here as The Ice Storm.
It snowed all day then iced a few inches on top of the snow.
People with generators suddenly became very popular.

Good morning,
Still have power at this point but it has begun to flicker at times.  Overnight the precip waffled back and forth between sleet as Habs pointed out and freezing rain.  Supposed to continue pretty much throughout the day until it turns into snow this afternoon.

Hanging in there.  So far so good.  Thanks for all of your warm wishes!

Take care of yourself, my friend!  If you do lose power and need to go somewhere, I'm a little distance away but mi casa es su casa.  You and Jan can come on up and stay right through the Super Bowl......we're having a smokeout anyways and the more, the merrier!

Hey Ky

Hate to say it but I'm glad for now it is staying up there.  Remember the '94 ICE STORM well and don't want to go through that again.  It looks as though ya'll are getting a pretty good pounding.  We are right on the line - Freezing, but pouring rain so no ice build up to speak of except of some in the hollers up north of town.   Heck even our schools aren't closed and that is extremely surprising as they usually close at the first mention of a snowflake.  Thoughts are with you, stay warm and stay off the roads if you can - best to let the idiots do their imitation of ice skaters before you get out!  I think we are supposed to get an inch or two of snow tomorrow.  Danged and here I am without any milk in the fridge.   ;D

Funny Olds, my daughter is in Miami, she was cold last nite with temps in the 70's. :D :D

Debs, last I heard, about 10" of snow after midnite, mixed with sleet/ freezing rain than all rain at the end.
Your area usually gets hit harder than mine being that you're in the valley. Good luck, be safe.
I don't mind the plowing, it's the shoveling all the paths for the boys.

Planned on smoking some tasso tomorrow. Maybe, maybe not.
A pot of coffee will be made ahead of time if I loose power. I learned the hard way from the last storm. Just heat it on the wood stove. ;D

As they used to say on the radio, "And the hits just keep on coming"!  No phone service at home, no power at home, huge limb broke part of my privacy fence.  Another landed on my a/c compressor and damaged it.  Don't know how bad but I'm probably not going to need it for a while anyhow. :D The precipitation is now 100% freezing rain and is still coming down.  Supposed to turn to snow later this evening and snow all night.  Weather radar shows solid moisture all the way back to Lubbock Texas and coming our way.  Still, it could be much worse.

For those of you in the path of this storm, it is really moisture laden so expect some significant accumulation when it finally reaches you.

Thanks for the warning KY, take care.

They changed our forcast from 4-8 to 6-12". It depends on where the snow/ice line ends up. I'd rather have the snow than the ice like you did.

That freezing rain is horrible. We had some a few weeks ago down in Wasilla and it shut roads down for a few days. Just a mild minus 45 at work right now. No rain though  :D

Hey Debs, how you holding up? We got about 5" of snow, now it's freezing rain, snow, sleet and whatever you want to add. :)

About the same here.  Started changing to rain about the time you posted but I don't think it lasted long.  Nowhere near what they predicted unless it starts again.  Enough to cancel school.  I haven't been out so I don't know how the roads are.

Hope KyNola is ok.   I haven't seen any posts from him yet, but haven't been through everything.  Taking a quick break & then back to work.

I just got in from cleaning the driveway. We got about six inches total, over half was sleet/ice mix. Makes shoveling very heavy! It's still coming down right now, but now its more snow than sleet. Interstate 80 is closed near here, I guess there are trucks stuck in both lanes and the plows cannot get through. The wind is really picking up now, I hope that is a sign that its about over? Can we be that lucky? This morning when I left for work it was sleet/ice mix, not a fun drive up the mountian to work. Wasn't much better coming home either, took about twice as long. At least we did not lose power, knock on wood..... ouch it hurts knocking on your own head.  ;D

Ky, hope everything is ok.
Deb, HCT, NEPAS, it hasn't stopped here yet so you most likely have more to look forward to.

Hey guys.  Made it to the office today for a short time.  Starting the 5th day with no power.  House is warm thanks to gas logs and can cook on our gas stove.  My roof has 3 holes in it but they are patched.  Should get up in the mid 40's today and melt the majority of the ice.  Gasoline, kerosene, ice and in some communities water are all valuable commodities right now.  The folks in the outlying counties are really in a mess.  They have had to post police at the gas stations that are open to prevent the fights that have been breaking out.  Some of the rural communities have no potable water and that means no sewage either.

Jan and I are fine.  We are merely inconvenienced compared to thousands of others.  Please pray for those folks.  I am able to receive emails and PM's via my blackberry.  Verizon has been kick ass through all of this.  AT&T has really sucked.

All of you take care.  I will have lots of smoking to do when we do get up and running again as my freezer can't hold the temp any longer.

Take care KY. Its good to hear you and Jan are ok. Hope the power gets restored quickly.
When that storm came through PA we were told it would be mostly snow but we got about three inches of sleet/freezing rain mix and a coouple inches of snow. We were very lucky that we had little freezing rain. Now we are being told a major storm is coming up the coast and to watch for 12-18" sometime Tuesday-Wed. I would rather deal with that then what you went through.

Thanks everyone.  Jan just called at 12:45CST and our power has been restored.  If it stays on, we're in good shape.  Without cable and internet at home but we can live with out that.

Keep good thoughts for all of the thousands who are not as fortunate as Jan and me.

Wow. Its good to hear all is ok. We in DelMarVa were under warning on that storm but it went well south of us and faded.  Are area is notorious of the Ice Mess.  Since the Ice storm of 94 in thee parts the power company's have been aggressive in cutting trees well to prevent outage.  Some still happen in heavily congested areas but still happens.  They learned their lessons.  Now power is only out in hours, rather than days/week.  Once in 92 Power in January/February with Ice kept us out of work for a week.
