Title: Newbie*
Post by: Fuzzybear on January 26, 2004, 12:03:52 AM
Hey guys!
I've been lurking here all day...read all kinds of nice stuff - here's my story:

Been hot smoking for 10+ years using an electric Maco and a Brinkman..been wanting to purchase The B.S. for about 3 years since first eyeballing it in the Cabela's catalog but was to cheap to spend $399 plus shipping.

So, the years past and my MECO? (labels worn off) finally pooped out/corroded/electrical short so I took the plunge...ws even considering the Egg and the Cookshack

Read a lot of posts (thanks! some things to look forward to), googled Bradley Smoker, visited my local BBQ shop, came back and compared 5 (3 won out) different suppliers....
Chez Bubba- great price on the $360 deal but no cover + shipping - Sorry Chez but I'm cheap...how I wanted it was $410 - a great price
The Barbecue Store - by the time I added the cover and the bisquettes it came to $413 with shipping...also a good price compared to retail, however, the winning contender was:  www.americasbestbarbecue.com...
$375 for the smoker with cover + $23 for a 48 pack apple bisquettes and no sales tax and no shipping...total price $398.40.[:D

I feel a little bad as Chez has great recs from this forum but as I said, I'm cheap![^]

Fuzzy,

No problem on the decision-making, welcome to the Bradley community. We would have gladly substituted a cover for the 60-pack, even rebated you the $6.14 difference in price. I'm not sure how it is they claim the cover is "a $39.95 value". I guess we're selling them below cost.[:0]

12 bucks on the initial purchase may make sense to you, and I appreciate that. But if they're selling covers for $17 more than us and 48-packs for almost $4 more, who really shows the value. Add to that that we offer all of our smoker customers a 10% lifetime discount on bisquettes.

We actually use the product we sell & are happy to talk to anyone about any aspect of using the Bradley. I'm guessing their 800 operators wouldn't be able to answer many of your questions.

Anyhow, you're going to love your smoker once you get it and use it a few times. As I said before, welcome, hopefully you will continue to post your experiences so we can all share the passion.

Happy Smokin',

Kirk

Yeah, Kirk!  Thanks for the input - I was shopping bottom line on everything...I'm expecting delivery by or about 2/6/2004... Like I said, places I went were within 10 bucks delivered to my front door.

In any event, I will be purchasing the spacers from your site and of course will be looking for deals on the wood where I can find them.  My local store (Barbecues Galore) retails the 36 packs at an outrageous price of $29.95!!! (plus tax of 8.2%)So, as you can see, it's not financially healthy to purchase locally out here in California.

Chickens/salmon/albacore/bluefin/yellowtail/jerky will be my primary considerations for it. Everything after that will be an experiment.

Got your order, thank you, Anne will call you tomorrow. Unless we get another 18" of snow, we'll send it out tomorrow and you'll probably get it before your smoker arrives.

Hate to point out another chink in the competitions' armor, but hey, when it's slow & in the middle of the plate, you gotta swing.[:)]

Thanks again,

After 53 years of trial and error purchasing, I've finally learned that the immediate value of "cheap" is far outweighed by the benefits of "trust", "reliability", and "service". I don't know anything about "America's Best BBQ" regarding trust and service, but I do know about Chez Bubba's reputation in that area.....untarnished!

I don't see any other retailer giving free advice and a constant presence to us "probies" on the Bradley Forum. For my money, I'll stick with what I know....for value added purchasing, my $$ goes to Chez Bubba!!

Not slammin your choice, Fuzzy Bear, but this forum is the place to share both needs and experiences and my own experience is, to paraphrase Forrest Gump.....Cheap is as Cheap does!!  [;)]

Well guys, I'll fill you in on the progress...it is now day 3 since placing the order from american bbq... right now, service is what I expect - 10-15 days for delivery - apparently, american bbq places the order with the factory distribution warehouse and that's where it's shipped from - they don't have them in stock like Chez Bubba.

<font color="blue">(Points for Chez Bubba on stocking and immediate delivery</font id="blue">)[:D]

It will be a good comparison for future shoppers!  Sometimes you just have to give things a try... this is all about learning, right????

I understand completely regarding service - Chez Bubba has already outdone themselves with my order on the spacers and wood - shipped yesterday and ordered on Tuesday! (More points!)[;)]

Fuzzy,

Bought my BS from "Americas Best..." also just before Christmas.  I got a bit nervous because of the time of year and such.  Emailed them and had a VERY quick responce, told me everything I needed to know.  I have accually talked to them on the phone also.  I have had 20 years of customer service behind me and I was quite satisfied with them.  Everything came in just like they said it would.  I don't think you made a bad choice.

When trying to locate a place to purchase my BS, EVERYONE I talked to said they would have to order it from the distribution center.  I don't think you are experiencing anything out of the norm.  Mine came in sooner that what the distribution center said it would.

I am also quite happy with "Bubba Dude" his help and suggestions on this site has saved me alot of time.  I will purchase from him in the future just for that.  (however those bubba pucks are a bit pricey, come on-how about a sale???)

I hope you enjoy it as much as I have...

Fuzzybear,

Have you called Americas Best BBQ, what did they say?  I had such a good experience there, I'm just a bit surprised.  Everyone there whether on the phone or by e-mail were so nice and helpful.  If they are having problems I'd like to know so I don't shaft anyone else about my suggestions.

The best price on the wood bisquets that I have found are from Jack's Country Store, they are in Washington State.  Very nice people, shipped the same day.  120 box 39.95, minimal shipping

Let me know..

I sent them an email inquiring as to status on Saturday but I'm assuming that they wouldn't respond until today sometime...I'll check my AOL email when I get home after work to verify.

Thanks for the info on Jack's - to bad they are Western WA, I"m moving to Spokane either this year or next - would have been nice if they were closer!

Hey Big Fuzz,

Just wanted to let you know that <s>Americas Best</s> is off my referance list.  I feel bad for ya.  Just think a life that is on hold and not being enriched by a BS.  That is painful.  I enjoy this little black box to no end.  You must try making your own bacon (this was something I never thought I could do) it is fairly easy and down right great.  Give us some pictures when you get that thing seasoned in well.

Hey, do any duck hunting out there??

No duck hunting out here - you gotta remember that California is so left wing that if you step on an ant and kill it, chances are good someone (nameless) in a (namless) organization will give you a beating for it....seriously, in So. Cal, quail is the game...ducks are up north where it's wetter and colder - down here, ducks is more like pond creatures - we're to citified in the Los Angeles area.

I would bet one would be tasty in the smoker though or a pheasant!

But thanks for checking - ABBQ did say 10-15 days....today is day number 14...sniff....wahhhhhhhh![V]

Finally getting somewhere...ABBQ has finally provided me with a tracking number from FedEx...now they say another 3-5 working days for final delivery.

But................since they are sending it out tonight (was I lied to previously?) the number won't be available until late tonight or tomorrow for tracking....

I would not give this company a good reference unless somebody really  wanted to spend $400 and sit around and wait for a product to show up....and then I would still strongly discourage them from using ABBQ.

ABBQ is fortunate that they are not a member of bizrate.com as my experience would be posted in a most negative way (can ya tell how happy I am??)

I know it's only one experience but I'm here to tell you that nobody gives me more than one chance let alone take 20 days to do it...

Forum master:  Should we have a "rate this vendor" forum?  If so, I'll be first in line.

My deepest apologies Chez Bubba...If only I had known what I know now, I'd be a happy smoker cookin' my hens, fish and beef...

I promise - no more posts until I have received it, then one final to let you all know I got it.

After that, posts will be in the cooking section.

Thanks and have a great day!

****UPDATE*** it has left the distribution warehouse locally and is now "enroute" - probably so they can kick it around some more before final delivery!

Mallard:  I'm jealous but I told gramma to take the chicken outta the freezer and let it thaw for tomorrows dinner!  Dry rub and a can of apple juice stuffed up it's errrr...ummm...."cavity" and I think I'll use some Mesquite pucks along with a couple of aluminum ones!

Fuzz,

It sounds like you getting axcited like a little puppy when he sees his master.  You know the wagging tail and (please don't do the other thing)...

Just to add what I'm smokin, 6 HUGE Pablano peppers stuffed with Cojack cheese and of course BACON....I haven't forgot the baked pots either, (kind of messes up the low carb thing).

So, I should be expecting the cover and the pucks via regular mail?

I would have thought all items would be shipped and delivered at the same time since I paid for them all at the same time...

I have another phone call into ABBQ but do not expect to hear back before Tuesday...

Thank goodness I had the forsight to order some pucks beforehand!

I'm good to go and it's not raining so it's not like I need the cover right away....

During the Daytona 5oo I smoked some Coho slabs that I marinated in Rum. It was raining this morning, so I went to the hardware store and bought some aluminum coil dryer vent hose 4in. and vented the smoke outside while the BS stayed nice and dry inside the garage. Life don't get any better then this?[:D]

Well, ABBQ returned my call 1 day earlier than I thought - they apologized and said that my cover and pucks would be mailed (guess what?) via "FEDEX" tomorrow or the next day...swell[:(]

I can hardly wait...my pucks will probably resemble a box of sawdust.

Fuzzy,

Man, saw that chicken.  I hoped it taste as good as it looked. I'm sure it did. Good job. I still can't beleive it about abb, but what ta hay, this to shall pass.  This time next year you won't even think about it.  Keep the pics coming.

The loin back ribs came out perrrrfect.  My ribs I have always seemed to have a problem with.  Switched to loin backs.  Preheated my BS for two hours at 200.  DID NOT, I repeat DID NOT look at them for four hours.  Then took them out when the internal temp was at 187.  Total of 8.5 hours with 4 hours of smoke.  Thought they may come out dry.
I even impressed my wife.  When it comes to ribs that is almost impossible to do.  Very slight crust, good flavor and I'l be darned-moist.. They were even moist on the second reheat.  They finally looked like they rendered correctly.

YES!![:D][:D] Glad this saga is behind you!! After 112 posts on the BS forum, (ALL of them interesting/informative/useful, I'll add[;)]), it's gratifying to finally see the durn thing in your hands!!

Thanks for the invite to smoke my fish[;)]....there's a snowball's chance in hell that I'll EVER voluntarily leave Alaska to go back anywhere near the I-10 freeway, but if I do, I'll bring some King slabs and help you displace a little of that yellowish mustard gas stuff I used to breath there, with a little REALLY healthful alder smoke and salmon steam [:D]

I just got back on the forum after a brief recess and am anxious to check out the rest of the threads to hear about your choice of inaugural (sp?) meats!![:D]

Man, I hate it when I learn way to late.

I have been waiting to replace my smoker for a long time now.  Last Spring I decided it was time but did not know.  My Father-in-law and I were at BassPro and we looked the Braldey over.  A couple days late, he was setting his up and reading this forum.

It took some time for me to finally say yes.  I told myself Fall was when I would go forward.  I searched for a while for best price.  And like others went with Americasbestbbq.com

I did not see FuzzyBears ordeal or others.

Mine was Ordered September 27 (card charged then also) and its now November 2nd and still no smoker.  My wife and I have been going back and forth with them since October 21st and still no resolution.  They even claimed Bradley lost the order sometime.

I hate having to be yet another owner to be to learn the hard way.  And all this to save $5

IKW,

Sorry to hear about that. I'd bet a thousand bucks it wasn't Bradley's error. Not to rub salt into your wound, but MD is usually a 2-day point for us. (You could always cancel.....[;)][:D])

You're gonna love it once you get it & we look forward to your posts about your experiences.

I agree with the cancel if you have not received it. Ya I know you have to fill out a form with the CC company. And the monies take a little while in being credited back to you. But 5 weeks in bucket is too long.

When I order something and it goes past a ten day period I make one call to explain that the item must be received within the next 5 days. If not I will contact my CC company and explain to them that the company has not honored its shipping agreement. Thus I will challenge the charged amount.

Yep, cancel. That's ridiculous. You paid too much to get it from a place with no reputation I know of. I checked their prices, and I paid $75 less for my SS Bradley than they charge and it came with more accessories. I bought mine from [edited to avoid flames] and it arrived in less than a week. It's a bummer you paid good money for nothing. IMHO, they've taken too long and it's time to cancel your order and buy elsewhere. After 5 weeks, no more promises, blaming, etc. They blew it and shouldn't get to keep your money any longer.

Absolutely cancel . . . and then order one from Chez.  The combo of excellent price, great service, and lifetime puck discount can't be beat, period.

All, I finally did get the Smoker, only after talking directly with Bradley.  They did right by us and got it to us ASAP and got us shipping info as soon as they got it.  I have all the respect for them.

I sent Bradley all the correspondence from the other company and verbally mentioned some of the language and blame they gave.

At this point, that's past us.  We got it this week and I am seasoning it tomorrow (Saturday) and first usage is Sunday.

thanks for the support.

Oh yeah, Bradley also send us the Smoker pack with the "Special Blend" - aka "hot dog wood"  At least I can season with it and not waste some of the great Hickory  or Mesquite I got from Kirk.  - this was not the option from the original company.

Also I will use Kirk (ChezBubba) for supplies, buy from a user.  I learned my lesson.

Whoa...... Hey now..... Lets not shoot the messenger.
As a FedEx Ground contractor, I feel I have to step in here.  I understand that when a package is coming via FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc... it's commonplace for the carrier to bear the burden of blame.  I assure you all that FedEx (Ground anyways) pushes the phrase "Every package, Everyday" to the max as there are service standards to maintain.  I also worked at UPS briefly and I assure you that packages are kicked around equally everywhere.

Anyways, glad you finally got your smoker.  I've had mine for about a year now (even with small dent in the side of it from UPS[^]) and is one of the best purchases i've ever made.  I think I paid about $320 shipped for it with no accessories from ****.  (better not say).  I know locally Sportsmans Warehouse sells  them for around $400 and sells the 48pks for $15.99.

Printed everything here with a grin on my face..  Nobody take me too seriously, eh?
