I have owned a OBS for about a year .5 now and I have had a great time using it. They bad thing is that I am a candidate for Heart Disease because of genetics. I am still relatively young (29),  and I have been watching what I eat for some time relative to fat/cholesterol/trans fat/red meat, etc.

I woke up this morning to the news going on about how red meat is not as bad for you as they thought in terms of heart disease. After reading the below article, it sounds like the salt is the devil along with that foosball.

Now, I'm not one to believe everything you read, but I thought I would see what everyone else thought of this article. I'm know moderation is key. I'm also going to ask my physician about what he thinks of this, too.

Thanks.

Joe,
Without even reading the article. I will say this. I stopped listening to all media hipe about what's good for you and what's bad for you a long time ago. Yes I have Heart worries as well and I pay very close attention to whats happening in there. Everything is good and bad for you depending on how much you have. I went as far as to take a bottle of rub to my cardiologist to show him how much salt I eat and what types of food I eat. He said I was doing fine. Trust me I eat some bacon so I was worried. Exercise and moderation is what we need to watch. By doing what we are doing we know exactly what is in there, and I have yet to add Yellow #4 or Red #5 or any of them other crazy things to my pulled pork. Like they do to the stuff you by at the store. I believe that is the stuff that is killing us all the added crap to make it look perty
Bacon is the Crack Cocaine of the Food World.

Be careful about calling yourself and EXPERT! An ex is a has-been, and a spurt is a drip under pressure!

Very well put. I greatly agree that when we (the members of this board) create, we are cutting out all of those crazy ingredients that processors use. You know, the stuff you cant PRONOUNCE let alone find on the shelf alone in a market.

I buy 90% of our red meat and pork from local providers. I make my own rubs and sauces. And as I said before I enjoy in moderation.

I belong to the church of moderation
I think most things in moderation are fine.  That goes for red meat and the death of us all, butter !   LOL
I only eat cold cuts that I make, they have mininal amounts of cure
I try and buy organic meats but admit I dont take the same care with other food groups  ( are there others ? )
I rarely use salt when preparing food, even in rubs.  When I do use salt, its ground sea salt, not iodized
Red meat tends to be relegated to the weekend.
They say pork is not so bad for you, neither is chicken so I figure so ribs and BBQ wings won't kill me

Maybe I am wrong in my convictions.  But of you dont eat truck loads of this stuff all the time, I thnk overall you hve to be not too far off
All I wanted to do was slow smoke some ribs.  Another addiction created thanks to the Bradley that requires regular servicing...  But what an addiction to have.  Even better to share here with some of the best people on the planet.

Would you like smoke with that sir ?

I too have a family History of heart conditions from genetics.

My Dad had quad bypass at age 72.

I had a heart attack at age 52.

If I live to be 60, life has been fun.

I'd rather enjoy what I want than to end up in a nursing home at some old age

pooping and pissing in my diaper.

I do watch what I eat so I don't bite my fingers. ;D

I maintain a few simple health rules for food, beverage and eating ...

1. there are no bad foods, just bad quantities of any food ("food" includes associated beverages, how much that is depends on the food, use common sense).
2. when it comes to your body and eating, the solution to pollution is dilution ... meaning drink more water (I believe this is the real issue behind the on again / off again arguments about salt).
3. leave the table still wanting a little bit more.
4. variety is the spice of life ... eat as many different things as you practically can every day and every week

I like animals, they taste good!

I'm going to die eating ribs and drinking Jack... It might come tomorrow and it might come in 50 years.

That said, I'll also die eat salads, veggies, drink juice and plenty of water.

I'm in control of my life, not the media. Forget about those articles and live life.

It has been my experience that modern science is the best guess going. I always take all the hype with a grain of salt. l am a firm believer that moderation and common sense is the key. Above ALL else, enjoy your life.

Ya end up just as dead doing everything "Right" as you do by breakin' all the rules and having some fun along the way.  Yeah, doin' things "right" may let you live longer, but if you ain't having fun, what's the point?

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, with good eats in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming.... DAMN, WHAT A RIDE!!

I don't follow 7-day Adventist diet but do you know they live about 17 years longer than the average American? Something to be said for that.

And they make the world's greatest veggie burger. :) There are a couple of camps within a 25 mile radius. They use to hold a fair every summer that they open to the public. I would go there just for those burgers.
