Thought I would start a separate thread on this topic for ease of gathering information.  I read a thread where someone used their PID to control the heat for a turkey roaster and I'll be darn if I can find that thread.  The roaster that I have is 1450 watts.  I went to the Auber site and found this statement regarding the dual probe made for the Bradley which is what I have.

4)  The power rating is 1440 watts for 120VAC, more than sufficient for the 500 watts required by the Bradley smoker. It will also work for Bradley Smokers that have an additional 500 watts heater installed. If you are going to use it for larger smokers, you need make sure the total power drawn, including the smoker generator control output, should not exceed 1440 Watt at 120V (or 2000 Watts at 240V).

I am 10 Watts over the recommended rating and it gives me a bit of a concern as I don't want to blow up my PID. Right now I water heating in the roaster for testing to see how the controls are working.  Seeing if I can get it to hold 160 by itself without using a PID.

Does anyone have any input if the extra 10 watts draw will damage my PID?  Will keep you all informed on this little test run.

Enough ain't enough and too much is just about right.

10 watts is really nothing. i do not have an auber but would think it would have a fuse to protect it from pulling too much current. i'm not sure if the hot water needs controlled that tight for sausages anyway.

I suspect and you could confirm this with a quick email to Suyi at Auber, that the SSR (relay) which is built into the controller is what is limited to how much power you can switch. The higher the power you switch the more likely there will be a failure.

On the other side of the coin Auber has very economical PIDs that would easily control it. I'm thinking about $50 or so.

For an example this PID and SSR are about $50. Throw in a temp probe and your there.

Just finished my test on my new toy piece of equipment.  No need for a PID found.  Filled it with water and dialed her in at 350 and when she got to 160 I backed her down to just under 200 and she held 160 for 2 hours.  Will have to play with it when I do a 10 pound load of Kielbasa to find the sweat spot and mark it so I will have a good dialed in line.

Was worried for nothin  ;D  I am a thinkin I am going to really like this roaster.

Many thanks to those that have suggested getting a roaster to do the hot bath.  Sure as heck beats using my big cook pot on the stove.
