I have a pork blade roast. I am wondering if it is the same as a pork butt?

I agree with KyNola.  I have smoked many labeled as such.

Has to be, the shoulder/butt is the only part of the pig with a blade bone.

I asked this question of a local butcher as the naming convention differs here in Canada vs other parts of the world from where we used to live.  Pork blade roast and pork shoulder roast are slightly different cuts but as mentioned, both from the shoulder so they're used interchangibely because they're so identical.  The pork butt (aka Boston butt.. I had no idea what the Boston part meant!) has slightly more fat than the blade shoulder but they're practically side-by-side on the animal so it shouldn't matter.  I was told to use either or as he hadn't heard of any recipies specifically calling for one but not the other.

I always wondered how they decided to call a cut from the shoulder a butt? When my mom used to threaten to paddle my butt she wasn't referring to my shoulder or any part of my anatomy remotely near my shoulder.

While Wiki is not always accurate, this article might answer both questions.

The answer to "why is it a butt" is the same as I have read in several authoritative articles; doesn't make it true but seems to be accurate and there is indeed a barrel made a certain size called a Pipe or a Butt.

Lived and learned today, as usual. Thanks Pachanga!
