Does anyone from Saskatoon sk Can know where one would get a true pork butt? All I have access to are pork picnick shoulders. I have searched everywhere in Saskatoon with no luck. I'm not sure if picnicks are good enough for smoking since I've seen no one using them here or anywhere on the internet.

Hi Kayes;

You can smoke the picnic but it just isn't quite the same as butt. "But" if that is all you can get, then give it a try. Also, ask at the store where you find the picnic and they could probably order a butt in for you.

Talk to some of the butcher shops there. I'm in Moose Jaw and I'm not familiar with the Saskatoon Butcher shops but there are lots of them. Here's a link to one of them and it shows they have bone in pork butts.

I would try and find a butcher you like and try to develop a good relationship with them.

thanks for the link! I've been in there before (be it a while ago) and they didn't carry it.

Go to Prairie Meat or Borisykis.   I've bought them there.

Are they in stock or do they order them for you?

Haven't been there for over a week but they had them when I was there.   That was at Prairie meats.   Ask one of the butchers.  They'll tell you right away.   Chances are if they're not on display, they'll have some in the fridge.   Haven't been to Boryiskis for some time but again ask.   Vic will likely have some.

Bit late to the party here, but whenever I am home in Saskatchewan I almost always smoke a Butt or 2 for the family.  I actually keep a Bradley on my parents farm just for this...  they don't use it themselves, only I do when I'm home visiting  :D  Anyway, I am always able to get the Butts from one of several local butchers.  Sometime they have them right there, but sometime they have to order it....  but they can always get it.  In fact... I ordered 2 from a Safeway butcher once and also IGA...  I imagine they are all plugged into the same or similar suppliers...

You've got some good suggestions above (Gosh I miss Prairie Meats and Boryskis...  I was a big customer of theirs when I was at University in Saskatoon!)

One more good "meat" contact might be a guy named Trent Ens who last time I checked was still curing and producing his own charcuterie type products out in Martinsville...  couple links below:
