Hi
Does anyone know of a supplier of "Puck Savers" in the UK, looked ay buying from the USA but carriage costs are pretty heavy these days - any info greatly appreciated.

I'm not over there but I just stopped by a local muffler shop and they had a scrap of new muffler pipe the right diameter that I cut to the right thickness and they have been working fine, so it's something to try if you can't find the real thing locally.

Hi, Pikeman, and welcome to the forums.

Don't know about UK suppliers of puck savers, but I have thought about a couple of do it yourself versions that might work.  Probably the easiest would be a piece of metal pipe with close to the appropriate outside diameter, cut to the correct thickness to match a puck.  You'll want pipe with a fairly thick wall to sit well on the stack of pucks.  In addition to pipe, look at pipe fittings and the like to find something just a little smaller in diameter than a puck.  File the burr off the cut edges and bevel just a bit and it should work.  Another option would be made from aluminum bar stock that is as wide as a puck is thick.  This would have to be formed around a wood mandrel, and might take a bit of gentle hammering at the end to close it up to the correct diameter.  The mandrel would be a chunk of wood made round to the appropriate diameter, then a slot cut across the middle of the circular stub.  The purpose of the slot is to hold the end of the bar stock so you can start to wrap the metal around the circular stub.  When fully wrapped, cut off the excess bar stock.  The aluminum will want to spring back a bit, so a person might want to make the mandrel a little "under sized" to allow for the spring back.  And cut the bar stock off a little short, as a small gap shouldn't cause a problem, and will allow some room to close things up if the diameter of the "puck saver" should be a little too big.

If you can't find any supplier in UK and you manage to figure this out by cutting pipe I think you might have a business opportunity!

Saber thank you for this! I was just thinking about ordering up some 2.25" OD aluminum tubing and cutting up some for me to use for this exact purpose.

If you have some aluminum foil you might check out the link below.

They might but the above method with the quick and dirty puck savers idea is free.

The quick and dirty puck savers worked a treat. My first smoking session went very well, the chicken was to die for.

Any issue with using pieces of alum. pipe cut into pucks? I could make those for nothing as apposed to paying $20 for three? Thanks!!

I use homemade tinfoil puck savers the work really well. I used premium foil (thick) and a hammer to finish them off. They are solid and have lasted 6 months so far.
