I talked to a teacher friend of mine the other day who was telling me she got her class to write some thank you notes to veterans and had the kids fan out in different mall parking lots in our city (these were highschool kids) and put them under the windshield wiper of any car with veteran license plates on Rememberance Day. She had the kids put her name and the school number as a contact number. She said the number of grateful veterans who called her was amazing. The best call was from a woman who wanted to tell her that  her 86 year old husband broke down in tears when he read the letter on his car. No one had directly thanked him before. For all the bad press young people get, there are a lot of great kids out there...

That was a great idea and gesture on the part of the teacher and students. There are a lot of good kids; it just takes a little bad press, or for an individual to have a slight moment of bad judgement to cast a negative view on the whole group.

How very true, the children at my boys primary school have such a good understanding of Remembrance Day, and the eldest is so proud to go on parade with the local Cub Scouts on 11/11.

At Harvest Festival they take boxes of food to the old folk living around the school, go out at Chritmas and sing in a nearby nursing home and enjoy doing it. Just a couple of examples that the youngsters of today do not always get the credit they deserve.

I try to get them to understand guys and girls like the soldiers in Iraq and Afganistan are the real heroes, not overpaid overpampered arrogant sports stars, sleezy politicians or the endless numbers of Z list so called "celebrities" who clutter our TV screens.
