We get a lot of driftwood off the beaches around here and also get off-cuts of wood from the local Forestry Board plantations by the truck load.

I know several people with the stove below and have recently got one myself. Whilst it takes a couple of burns to season and a couple more to fully get conversant with it, I can thoroughly recommend them, better than any outdoor wood burner I have ever come across:

To date I have not cooked on it.

Unfortunately it is only available in the UK and although the company that sells them is a local one I have no connection with them in any way other than a satisifed customer.

The designer actually does relief work in Mongolia and the stoves are used out there in temperatures down to minus 26C!

Looks like a modern version of the old wood/coal burning stoves that were around before electricity!  I grew up on a farm in the late 50's and early 60's and we used one of the old stoves along with fireplaces to heat the house and sometimes to even cook on.  Back then we did not have a chainsaw and chopping/sawing wood was a royal pain.  Brings back a lot of memories.  Hard life, but very rewarding and makes one appreciate the conviences of today.

Yes, you are right of course. The guy who designed it was in South Africa (Rhodesia) for many years and based it on a design he saw there a long while ago whilst in the bush. One of the many ideas he had as projects for when he retired which he did a year or two ago.

Ur not wrong there Wildcat!!!  ;)

Hi Manx, i really like that stove, looks like it could be great fun to cook on, i have an alluminium chiminea which i love messing around with, i've hot smoked steaks by hanging them in the chimney, they take on a mahogany colour and taste delicious!, sometimes i cook stuff on it that's been cold smoked with the BS, plus it's nice to sit by if the fire is roaring away.

I payed a fair bit for the chiminea as it's alluminium as opposed to cast iron, and although i really like it, i'd say your stove is much better value.

This is the chiminea i have:

That's nice LS...... and a nice price too!!  ;) :D

The beauty of this stove is that it is not expensive and that includes a cooking plate, it is virtually smokeless and completely burns all the wood to ash, seems much more efficient and controllable than the clay chiminea it replaced.

Perhaps not a pretty but it certainly has character!!

The lid is designed to take pans of two different diameters (large and small) so I am on the lookout for a suitable cast iron stock pot type pan to sit in the lid of the stove.... this is the main method of cooking in the areas of Mongolian that are using them.

For shipping off island they do not include the 1.5m chimney/flue..... too many have been damaged in transit! However they are cheap and easy to pick up at local builders merchants.

It also cuts down dramatically on the sparks and flying embers which occurs, particularly with driftwood. :D

Nice stove Manx. I haven't seen anything like that over here. Maybe JimGuy has up in Healy. That would be great in the smoker shed during the winter.

I like the look of that, Manx. Could be just the thing for my proposed workshop/den. My younger brother who lives in Cornwall makes similar sort of thing from old Calor gas cylinders, bit like a pot belly stove, and sells them at country fairs by the bucketfull.

By the way, been getting a fair few trout so I'll drop some off sometime soon. Works great Kummok style.
I've only been wrong once, and that's when I thought I was wrong. But I was'nt.

I think it would be ideal for that, I know the guy who sells them gets the chimney/flues from a builders merchant down Balthane Industrial Estate so you could probably get a longer one if needed. (chimney that is!!!!  ;) )

Very little smoke, very few sparks!

Hi Manxman
I've got a clay chimenia which is about 4feet tall and is know about 10 years old and badly cracked at fire-box level. Think your wood burner would be an ideal replacement. Excluding chimney flue what is height and dia pls
Thanks
