Trying to find out if I have proof of applying for a passport can I use this proof of application to travel to Mexico. I plan on applying for the passport tomorrow and going down to Mexico on tuesday. I know this is a last minute ordeal but my son-in-law's brother died last thursday so him and I plan on going down. This is if immigration approves his travel permit tomorrow. I can't believe all the crap and cost he has to go through  to get approv4d to travel. Any input would be appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken, a valid passport is required now. We were in Cozumel last spring and met a couple who had postponed an earlier planned trip because their passports hadn't arrived yet, and they couldn't get in without them.

As I read this, you should be OK.  Maybe check with a travel agent, or call the government.  I don't think you need the passport to get into mexico, but to get back into the US.  But As this web site states, I think you'll be OK untill Jan 31.

I guess I am assuming you would be driving.  If flying, you may be in trouble.

We'll be flying to Mexico City I beleive and heading a little bit south from there. I saw that website you posted but some people give different answers. The gal at the post office said no, but then I read that website. I think I read that if flying it should be no problem. Gonna call the that state website tomorrow morning. Personally, I don't think any of those people know what the hell is going on. :D :D Looks like the roll of the dice with who you talk to.
Going for passport photo now, post office tomorrow.
Ha, making a list of what I can bring back. Tequila is on the top. :P :P

I'm not sure if the airline will even let you on the plane without a passport.  If you haven't check with the airlines, that may be a good place to start.

I think you're right acords. I know we had to show ours going and coming home.

I think the airlines are just making sure you have one before you leave, so you can get back in the country.

The way I party in Mexico, just because I have one when I leave doesn't mean I'll have it when I come back! ;) Really, never had any problems-the wife takes pretty good care of me.

acords, Great thought of checking with the airlines, 'doink' ???, why didn't  think of that? I'll be checking with them, if anybody knows it'll be them.
OK, here's the scoop, 59 yrs old, never been on a plane, never wanted to either.  The thought just scares the crap out of me but, and it's a big BUT, The food is more attracting then the fear. My s-o-l tells me that for the next 9 days after the burial it's a huge party of all the neighbors and relatives bringing over food. Plus the street food vendors really have my tongue salivating. And the best part is finally getting to meet his family. I knew I should have bought that Rosetta Stone that the're selling on tv.  :D :D
Will let you know the outcome of the airlines after my daughter calls. Back to my gumbo.
Thanks for your help folks, I really appreciate it, I knew I'd get some good feedback here. ;)

Well I guess this trip is off. One needs the passport to get back here in the good ol' U.S. of A..Well at least I'll have my passport. S-o-l will have to fly solo, hopefully, everything will go right for him tomorrow.
Now I'll just wait with my gumbo for the 18" of snow we're expecting. ;D

HCT;
Sorry to hear about your predicament.

I'm not looking forward toward tomorrow's weather; 6"-12" for my area. I'm hoping that the storms shifts further out in the ocean which will mean less snow.

Yeah, HCT, I'm also sorry to hear about your trip. Sounded like a fun time, even under the bad cirumstances.

From what I've read the back log for a passport is huge.
