Yellow Jackets...

Question for the pro's

I'm in the middle of smoking up pork butts to make pulled pork bbq. There is apparently a yellow jacket nest building up but its two town houses over in the gutter.

However, the smoker seems to be drawing them like crazy and gotstung a few times. I notified my landlord and they are spraying for this as I type to take care of it. And in friendly gesture Im going to give my landlord some pulled pork when its done.

This got me thinking though... Does smoking attract wasp hornets and yellow jackets by chance? I always though smoke drove those little *explictive* away?

Just asking this for personal knowledge out of intrest.

Don't know about bee's but I sure attract flies when I am smoking.

Ill get alot of flies too, but I was just curious about the wasps and stuff. I didnt know what it was at first and 2 yellow jackets went down my shirt.

I started dancing around like I was at an old Johnny Winter concert  :o

Ran inside and seen those little sons of *more explictives* starting to fly around.

I just been smoking about a year and out of intrest wanting to know if others have seen wasps attracted to smokers or not. What ever it was, they were pretty agressive little suckers that time.

I find the opposite. Most insects stay away. Are they attracted when you are applying smoke, or after the smoke has been applied and the dripping from the meat vaporize after hitting the drip pan (which creates a different type of smoke); that may be what it attracting the hornets.

Thats what I was thinking... about smoke should repel those suckers, but after reading what you posted about the differant type of smoke generated with drippings from the meat, attracting them Im willing to bet thats exactly what it is. I did use alot of dark brown sugar to rub down as well which probally highly conrtibuted to this.

I'm still learning and no place better then here.

Smoke will repel the bees and wasps.  More than likely, the yellow jackets feel that you are a treat to their nest and are acting in defense.
