Today has been a tough one. Even gaming tonight I did not do to well.

Then I check my E-mail and found this letter. A nice way to end a tiring day.

Raye Minor,
Are you the gentleman called Pineapple Raye that I see on a
few gardening forums. If so, would you be kind enough to
contact me?I have a few questions regarding my pineapple
plant.
I am a totally organic gardener and am now making an attempt to
grow pineapples.
I would love to hear from you. I was once a member of Garden
Guides, but asked to have my name removed.
I remember you defending me when Nancy and Artic Queen jumped
all over me for my organic beliefs.
If you choose, please contact me at [email protected]
If you are not Pineapple Raye can you contact me as I want to
continue my search?
Sincerely,
Alice Gamewell

I remember going to bat for this lady. That had to be 8-10 months back. Strange she would have remembered me after all of this time. What is even stranger is that until just a couple of months back I was using an yahoo addy there on that site that I never checked. This E-mail came to me via my business site.

I think she wants you! You know. Wants to go organic with Olds!

Better not let the little woman see this!

Too funny Bill,

What she needed was information on her pineapple. She is growing it in a container in zone 5!!! Seeing how once the outside temp. gets to 28 F it is a dead pineapple and she has now had it two years I was impressed enough to help her out. Now if you want I can post here my reply to her [;)] However, unless you are an organic gardener I would think it would bore you to tears. [|)]

John over on the Tropical Gulf Breeze Garden Site, I'm the resident organic guru~~! And moderator of the Organic forum. In the summer months my E-mail box runs over with gardening questions. From the simple like: "The slugs are taking over my roses. What can I to organiclly to stop them?" To the hard ones like: "I want to turn my yard into a totally organic garden. Where do I start?"

quote:
Raye: You think I could grow one indoors? I'm in zone 5 by your map.

Yepper not only can it be done in a Zone 5, but I have a friend in Canada who raise them. Hers are on a kids wagon. She has them in Growth Containers I designed for her. In the winter months she has a large Southern exposer inside her house. She also runs a growth light when that exposer is limited. Takes her about a year longer than normal to get a fruit.

Fuzzy I got some pups that in a few months I'm going to be shipping out to friends. If you want a couple let me know! Postage on me. Also I can supply you with plans for a Growth Container. You can make one in a couple of hours maximum. Below is a finished drawing of my first generation Growth Container some 15-16 years ago. There have been some changes since then. However, this will give you a fast idea.

Olds:

That would be so cool man! I shall await further instructions and the shipment along with plans. Oh, and if you could send me a hybrid with sharp spines (to keep the deer off of it!) that would be cool! (joke)

I will have to find a nice "decorative" pot if it's going to be indoors though.

If you look at my house, (let me know if you need another pic) what appears to be the front is actually the side - (all the windows) and faces West. My front door is covered by a porch and faces South. The winters here (my first season) are runnning Dec/Jan/Feb for all intents. I'm sure I'll need a grow lamp shining on it. These months are generally cloudy/overcast/foggy/snowing/drizzling rain with bouts of sunshine inbetween but not enough for 8 hours a day. Spring starts in March (our rainy month) and April starts to give way towards summer - rain/broken clouds/sun...May/June/July/August/Sept is really the growing season and temps can get to 100 at times..things start winding down after that - Oct is an ok month and the chill starts to hit in mid-November.

Well, now that I've run through the year!! (oh, this is not for Spokane proper - this is what goes on in my specific area - downtown Spokane is 25 miles south of me and I'm on higher ground in a shallow valley)

GulfBreeze is basiclly for zones 8-11. As such it is a smaller site. However, the members there are not your average gardeners. Check out some of the reviews on main page. Impressive to say the very least.

http://iconx.org/gulfbreeze/

Another garden site I go to is Garden Guides. Now it is for all zones. It is HUGE site with at least 2,300 plus members. I've seen at times well over 250 members on line as the same moment not counting vistors. Of course this is in the summer months. I believe there are 44 posting boards. The gardeners here are more of a "new" gardener where as those of Gulfbreeze are true vets.
Like all gardening sites on this side of the world it is slow now. However, on their "open" board I would like to point out that one of the threads has over 15,000 replies! & has been view over 111,000 times! It is here, on this site, that most of my free summer time is taken up helping out new gardeners.

There is one other person on this site that is pretty sharp with organics. Bryon. I glad he is there or I would never keep up. Here is one question about fertilizers and how a simple question can eat up a good hour or so.

Last summer I recieved an E-mail from one of the members of the GulfBreeze asking me to post how I did things. This will give you another idea as to why I'm not around the Bradley forums in the summer much.

As I've said on these forums I'm known as Pineapple_Raye. If you read the link list above you will get a good idea as to why that is my name.

I only grow this one gene of pineapple. It has very sharp edges and thorn like tips. I believe it would be in your best interest if in the summer months you place the plant outside. As far as a decorative pot you can turn those into a Growth Container with a little imagination. Also I can send to you a couple of Bromeliads that will make outstanding house plants. They will turn to a very rich dark green if in the shade. If you triger spray them with water 3 or 4 times per year you will be one outstanding flower. We have some here that have been in the ground now over 40 years that we know of. Mine are the more common type Billbergia Pyramidalis.

Here a picture of a small one in bloom:
The reason the leaves on this one are not real dark green is because it is getting too much filtered sunlight. If they get all sunlight then the leaves turn a pale lime green.

Let me know if you want a couple of these as well. Also if you give them room to grow they are almost like rabbits. In a couple of years you will be giving some away!

Thanks Olds, I've not had much success with Bromoliads in CA - most likely kept drying out and not enough water during the summer months. I would expect that indoors and in a corner, they should do nicely up here. My typical indoor temps vary between 62 and 72 during the winter, summer I can't comment on yet. The pups with the spiny's makes me think I can place them on my deck during the summer without fear of them becoming deer fodder, I guess the only way to find out is to put it outside.
If you could send the plans well ahead of the pups, that would give me time to set up a nice home for them!
Let me know the shipping costs...
THanks!
