Function of the "V" tray / trap

Other than catching the dripping and keeping them off the heaters;

Does the "V" tray serve any other function?

I found that even though there is more heat to the back, the "V" (drip) tray does appears to help distribute the heat better. It traps the heat and allows it to escape through the vents; providing better circulation of heat. It also seems to act as a heat sink and better distributes the heat over a greater area.

But then also I am probably way off on this. ;D

I think you're right Habs.  Without it, drips aside, the heat would probably be a lot more localized over the heating element.
