Has any one used this? Can anyone tell me about this item?
If a guy cant afford a guru would this unit be better than nothing or is it a waste of $50.00?
thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I have one, and prior to purchasing Guru, found it indispensable.  It is a good unit.  Range is line of sight, and not too far away, but if you smoke outside, you can monitor from patio through glass very well.  It is worth the money, but bet you could find it for less than $50.  Others will chime in on this.  We use it now for stuff in the oven when the Guru is tied up outside smoking real food.
Here is a source for you for $39.99  http://www.thegadgetsource.com/thermometer---timers-bbq-temp-checks---meat-thermometers.html

Look for even better prices/sales.  I think I bought one for $34.95 on sale.  Don't remember where.

Thank you for the info and the link.It is a better price as well as better description!!
This unit seems like it tells you what you need to know for a really great price. The Guru looks super but the price is really over most working guys budgets with child support, kids, and family coming frist.
This would be handy and a good thing to add to a Bradley,Right??
Anyone else had any experience with the Maveric? Please share your thoughts on this inexpencive unit.

Hi John,

Many of us on the Forum use the Mav ET-73 and really like it. Bill has done a very good job of describing it's limitations, but at $40, it is an excellent value.  It's not a Guru by any means, but it does free you from worry and allows you to sleep while the BS smokes away!  I'd love to get the Guru someday, but until then the Mav ET-73 is a worthy substitute.  I'd say it's one of the most important, if not THE most important, accessory you can buy.

ET-73 is a decent unit IMO. 100 feet is a stretch based on mine, even line of sight. Best I can get is 60 feet.

Wall thicknesses & differing constructing materials do seem to matter as to it's performance.

I'm happy with it, but am in want of a hundred-yarder.

Ya think next time I check into a hotel & they ask "Smoking or Non?" they would mind?

New to the board...My new Maverick worked fine for the 1st 8 hrs from about 60 ft, then wouldnt work past 2 ft.  I changed the batteries and still cant get it work like it did earlier. Any suggestions?  (I cant wait to post on how my first smoke turned out!)  T

T,

Welcome. You asked for suggestions & this is only that. I've noticed mine is particularly finicky in the timing & order in which you turn the 2 units on & off. Sometimes they don't want to talk to each other, sometimes they won't stop & I hear mystery beeps in the drawer.

BTW All, there is a really good joke in my last sentence, but I'm not going to be the one to say it!!![:D][:D][}:)][:D]

Thank for the responses..I fiddled with it and cant figure out why it worked all day when it wasnt in line of sight, then just stopped working.  I set it up 6 ft away directly in front of each other thru the glass and its working fine now.  I bought it at Cabelas here in town, so its getting returned tomorrow.  And oh yea, My brisket is in FTC now.  I havent been this anxious since my wedding night...T

Welcome to the Forum, Tony--don't be a stranger!

As for the Mav ET-73, you probably have done this, but just in case, make sure you turn on the units in the correctg order:  first the inside unit (receiver) and then the outside (sender) unit.  If you still don't get at least 60 feet with fresh batteries, take it back!
