I put mine under the lowest rack with meat on it.

That's where I put my PID sensor, with the ET-73 next to it.

Ninjak,

The sensor wire is thin enough that you can insert it in the smoker thorough the door and the door will still seal and no smoke will come out. I too would place it at the bottom rack with meat on it. You do not have to leave it dangling as ithe ET - 73 comes with a metal piece that clamps onto the rack and you can place the sensor end onto it. That way it is much easier to handle especially if you do switch the racks around front and back and up and down.

Is there more heat at the bottom of the smoker or top? I usually put mine through the top as I figured heat rises.

One should know what the meat is being exposed to. The mass will block and absorb the heat so just below and to the side of the meat is the ideal location.
