On another thread I stated I don't watch TV. I always have more projects going then I care for. This one my wife picked out for me It a 5 piece Oak wood wall unit for her books. You will notice there is no finish on it.

The reason there is no finish is my wife will squeeze the copper out of a penny. Plus I do a so--so finish. This is the last "little" 12 day project she picked out for me. Notice the stool and how it reflects the light on that dark paneling?

This just a little closer... notice the reflections on the table top? Ya I do a so-so job [:D]

Truth of the matter is while I hate the work by finishing this off myself we save big bucks. When I'm done with that wall unit I figure my wife (not me--LOL) will have saved 2 grand! I figure this 5 piece wall unit will take me 15-20 days if I spend 5 hours per day on them. Now you all know why I don't watch TV~~!

I treat them to a bath of clear water 3-4 times with a sanding in between (300 grit.) Two baths per day maximum. After that a very light staining. Allow it to dry and then I will then add my first finish coat. After each finished has dried (24 hours) I will wet-sand with 300 grit. I will repeat this for the first 6 days. After that the sanding is done with 600 grit and I will continue to add a finish/ sanding for at least another 6 days if not 8 days. If you have not wet sanded at 600 grit it is almost a polishing-hardening action.

One warning about using the 300 grit after the water has dried. If you do it too much you will polish the wood and it will be much harder to get your finish correct. Plus until you get to the 600 grit stage, keep your 300 gits sanding on the finish light. You want to make sure you fill in any areas with the finish where the feed fiber of the wood that did not swell up correctly during the watering.

When I'm done you will be able to comb your hair using it as a mirror.

I love my wife but at times she is a PAIN~~! Oh Honey Lookie At What I Got For You To Do~~~ [:0]

Disclaimer: I sure there are others who can do this better and faster than my method. But that is what comes from being self-taught with no one to show you the short cuts.

EDIT: Oh ya did I tell you she has 9 doors for me to do as well... [xx(] That is 18 sides... sometimes I think it would be better on me if I just moved to the couch. [;)]
EDIT EDIT: She also wants me to replace all of the painted base boards in this house with finished one---damn those home-improvment shows!!! Maybe I should just cut her TV cable into two. [}:)][}:)][}:)]

Thats real nice work. A lot better then I have seen on any finished furniture that you can purchase.

I've never seen a table like that. Did you have it custom built?

     I
         don't
                   inhale.

No it comes from a place called Wood You. They only sell non-finished items. I think that table (without the two chairs and two stools) was around $379.00 a few years back. That wood is an interesting hard wood. I believe it comes from South America. I'm going to mis-spell its name badly. Pair-a-way (?) The hardest part of that table was getting the white stain correctly.

Otherwise that wood is a jewel to work with. In fact I wish these wall units were made out of it instead of oak.

Sounds to me like you "secretly" enjoy the finishing work....it shows in the work!!

I know what you mean about those remodeling shows though....have you ever played one BACKWARDS??? They have hidden messages that convince the wives that ALL projects are easy and can be accomplished in 30-60 minutes and have GREAT results each time for UNDER $40[xx(][:(]

I started our cabin remodel project to provide a BASIC cabin for friends a family to stay while we GO FISHING.....she decides to provide AMBIENCE and it becomes a B&B and I now have to "blackout" dates in advance for my fishing buds.....think I'll build ANOTHER cabin and not tell her about it [;)][:D][;)]

Gotta run now....she visited a tile store in Anchorage last week and now "Mr. I HATE HGTV" is installing/grouting beach pebbles on the entire kitchen wall around the newly refinished cabinets in the totally refinished kitchen with the new floor/sink/fixtures/appliances/recessed lighting, next to the living room with two new french doors that required total wall disassembly/new headers/drywall, below the sleeping loft that got total new flooring/painting, above the 1st floor that gets new guest rooms/LARGE bath/new laundry/kitchenette, AFTER the new garage/private museum building is built that will be connected to the existing remodeled house with a 2nd phase project that adds media room/hobby room/master bedroom suite/grand entry, and on, and on, and on, until my wallet AND my hammer hand are too used up to enjoy the finished product[xx(][xx(][|)][|)] OR[:0]....I go put the boat in the water today[:p][:D], bring home lots of salmon and use the old, "I can't right now, Honey....I've got fish to smoke!!"

And NOW you know the REAL story behind why Kummok fishes so much[;)][:D][;)]

35 years of extinguishing smoking stuff and now I'm wondering WHY!

There is so much truth in your whole posting I have to quote it all... However, there is one word you used that just kills me. No doubt your wife and mine watch the same damn shows.... it is:
AMBIENCE AMBIENCE AMBIENCE and when she says it her voice go up as to accent it.......
quote:
It sounds like we both want to yell Momma make me go back to school.... LOL~~!
