PID question

I've seen this mentioned lots but have no idea what PID stands for.   Someone explain it to me and what are the advantages.

PID is a proportional–integral–derivative controller that provides a better control over temp and time for your smoker. It has 6 stages to set up different temps and pretty much accurate.

It is great to use on your smoker wen you are ramping tempretures for smokeing salmon and sausages.

PID = Proportional, Integral, Derivative

It is an electrical temperature control devise used to provide tighter temperature regulation of the smoker and a popular add-on to OBS and DBS. They will usually control the smoker within 1 or 2 degrees. Most use the Auber Plug and Play unit but you can build your own if you are so inclined as well. Here's a few links for you...

Thanks for the replys.    That explains it.   Have to give it some thought.  I find I'm using my smoker more now since I got the 6 tray DBS and have it set up to use in my heated garage (temp this morning is -32 C or -25 F) . I still have my OBS.   Looks like it might be a good idea with the OBS.
