And SmokinSoon

sorry no pics.

I really insulated the boxes good this time and the starter has been frozen.

I think this will help.

I've always wondered how you guys ship out frozen stuff like this...    What do you use for packaging/insulation, and how do you keep it cold, if I might ask?

(perhaps this warrants a new post)

I saved all my foam pkging from boxes and have cut down cheap styro coolers.

Each box has to be sorta custom built.

The starter I sent to SmokinSoon was actually 4 1/4 starters and he is gonna

take one and see if he can nurse it back up to a cup.

If so ..... that will help with the shipping of this live creature.

Thank you CRG!

And a "thank you" to Gus for being the go-between guy here.

I'll have to come up with something in return?

"Keep away from open flames" or something?  ;D

No the starter is the BOMB  hahaha, we just about had one go off in a post office hahaha

I have only had time to make one batch and it turned out great, everyone loved the sweet bread.
I just need to work on my baking skills, it will come with more practice.  I planning to bake again this weekend.

Have fun, I am

 Report:

Gus called me today and recieved 2 starters and they had busted out of their pkging and we are trying to nurse it back to health.

Talked to Smokin Soon and he said his arrived in great shape and he is doing the first step tonite.

No word from Steve.

I think I won't be shipping any more starter in warm weather.

Smokin Soon

I think this batch is going to be a winner! Did the mix in a glass bowl and I see some bubbles after 1 hour.

Awesome! I know you will be a "Sweet Bread" freak in a short while.

WOW! I am stoked.

CRG,

You have probably covered this 100 times but here it is for the 101st.

Friends of Carl Griffith 1847 Oregon Trail Sourdough Starter sends theirs out dry.  I have had one from them in the fridge for many years.   I also have two wild yeast versions I started from scratch (no yeast to begin, just captured from the air and flour) several years ago.

Here are some drying instructions.

It takes a week or so to bring it up to speed, but it worked for me.  Reviving instructions are here.

Just a thought this would be easier shipping if it works for your starter and I don't know why it wouldn't.  No cooling and it fits in a regular envelope in a baggie with a single first class postage.

Also, kudos to you for being so kind as to share and send out your starter as well as all else you contribute to this board.

Thanks,

Pachanga

Met with Test Rocket and delivered this:

The one on the right is the starter, on the left is some homemade BBQ sauce. It is also the first time I used a pressure canner to can the BBQ sauce so it is either a jar of well preserved sauce or homemade botulism. ::)

We met in a gas station parking lot about half way between us. Felt like a meth dealer trading jars in a parking lot.

Gus That starter just looks crazy.

You did a great job on the recovery!

So Gus beat me to the post...I did the yard when I got back!

Let me say a big "Thank You" To Gus and Sonny for getting the starter along with the BBQ sauce! I' look forward to tasting both of them.

Thanks again guys!

Got to go: Kickoff in less then 5.
