Hey Jeff, it has come time to replace my Sony, 21" Trintiton G520 monitor. At the moment I'm got the settings on the v-card and the monitor pushed to the max to help control the whiting grayish. It was a great monitor in its day. Damn expensive too! Close to $900.00 when it first came out.

Anywho I don't want another 500 pound gorilla on my desk, so I posted to the KoV boys and asked for suggestions. I'm now looking at the ViewSonic's 19" VX924. It is a true 19" so I will only be losing 1" of screen. What has really got my eye is that it is a 3ms monitor! WOW!!! Shoot with a 8ms you don't see ghosting in any game that I know of~~! Its native is 1280x1024, and what one review said also impressed me.
quote:
Also a major plus point is the way in which the ViewSonic handles scaling. Simply put, this monitor sports the best resolution scaling we've tested to date on an LCD.....If there's one feature on this monitor that can be classed as outstanding, it's this.

Kind of makes you wonder where the limit on this monitor will be--seeing how the max is suppost to be 1280 x 1024. Can you image 1600 x 1200 on a 19"? The images would be huge in a snipe scope. I bet you could see the sweat running down between the eye balls~~~ LMSO!

I found this monitor at TigerDirct for $399.99~~! A damn sight cheaper than my Sony for sure.

Whatcha think?

For those who do not understand the importance of resolution in a game look at these two pixs. The one on the left is 1280 X 1024. The one on the right 1024 X 768. Note that the cross hairs are the same size in both images. However, look at the bush where the red star is at. Both of these images was taken at max. snipe range with the same snipe rifle. The grayish white in this pix is ground fog...my monitor is not that bad yet LOL!

So you can see the higher the res. the better to see.

Olds you are the man. Thats a great price for the new monitor. Have you ever bought from Tigerdirect before? I might need to look at one of those myself[:D]

ViewSonic VG181B I believe is either a 20 or a 25 ms monitor. Plus its refresh is 60HZ. What that means that in play back of a game it would ghost something terrible. For example watching someone run across the gaming field and they would leave various degrees of ghost behind them. In short it cannot draw fast enough to keep up with the movement.

For non gaming applications it is a great monitor.

The ViewSonic's 19" VX924 is a 3-4 ms and refreshes at 75HZ. While it does not ghost I don't believe will be accepted by the main stream hard core gamers due to the fact that its native resolution is only 1280 x 1024. However, there are many gamers purchasing it.

You can get it at newegg for $377.99. I have done business with them and their service has always been a "Chez Quality." You just cannot go wrong with newegg.

Here is neweggs page and 96 reviews for this monitor. 99% of all reviews are 5 eggs (stars) The only issue with an LCD of course is: Dead Pixels Policy: Replacement or Refund for 8 or more dead pixels only. Seven of those in the wrong spot and you will not be happy.

Of course I do know of a guy who got a LCD with dead pixels (less than 8) and somehow the base on it when delieved was crack. So he was able to return it for another one. *cough* Perhaps dead pixels and cracked bases go hand in hand? [:0]

BTW Jeff,
I got into a game last night errr this morning around 1 am with a group that call themselves the East Coast Killers. The game play was siege. Anyway the team I was on for the most part are chargers. As in Gung-Ho. Now that might work in a "Firefight" but not in a "Siege." We were the attackers and the other team the defenders. The respawn count was 5 lives.

The map we were on I bet I've played 50 times over the years. I grapped this ultra silenced snipe rifle with a 16X scope. So I crawl my way around the back field to where the capture smoke is at. Also the defenders spawn points are real close to that smoke.

Well short story the Gung-Ho boys on my team while dying were also killing the defenders. That left me hanging back and taking out the defenders as they respawned. We get down to the 1 minute mark and my entire team is now dead. There are two defenders left. I look at the distant to the smoke and I'm thinking if I run I will show up as I know they are using ground sensors. I'm walking bent over as fast as I dare and then way off at max range I see this little head sticking up over a ridge. I can see the sensor on the ground in front of him. At that point I know he cannot see me as there are no sniper kits with sensors that are worth anything. 12X at best. So I take out his sensor with one shot. He goes to lay down another sensor and I see that--now a person cannot shoot when laying down a sensor. So I stand up so I can see more than just the top of his head, I took the shot taking him out. I then walked over to the smoke lay down in it for 3 seconds and won the game with 6 seconds left on the clock~~~ What a hoot. I laughed my shorts off.

Olds - I have dual ViewSonic VX924's at work and I LOVE THEM!!!

I don't have the opportunity go game with them obviously, but they certainly are sweet monitors.

BTW- what games are you playing these days? I find "Grown-up" gamers hard to find [:)]

Olds,

I have bought tons of stuff from New Egg with no problems over the years. In fact just got my new keyboard (a BMW Works designed, BENQ) and a new Logitec MX518 gaming mouse, I bought it for the resolution and thinking it was a gaming mouse it might last longer. Must say best mouse I have ever used, simply the smoooothist, plus I can change the resolution on the fly. I mainly do a lot of CAD and 3D image type stuff and the key programming does come in handy so I don't need to touch my keyboard as much.

The game I'm currently play is an older game. Ghost Recon (PC.) I do not game on public servers, or off of ubi. Just to many hacks.

While I will game some on RAW's private server I enjoy the ECK server better, as they IMO are just a better class of gamers. RAW runs a crack that shows all of the spawn points and they will camp on them during a Firefight. That is just cheap gaming IMO.

If you are into gaming and want to join us you will need the GR GOLD PACK. It has Ghost Recon, Desert Siege, Island Thunder and all patches. After that you will need to get with me so I can bring you up to speed on the mods we use. They are many. I can upload them so you can download them.

I also run an older Ventrilo Voice server (VoIP) and I can set you up with that client.

Now keep in mind that ECK does not put up a server every night. However, you can pick up the Gold pack at places like Comp USA for $19.95. That is a far cry from the $110.00 I paid.

These are the minumim specs:

System Requirements: Windows® 98/ME/2000/XP only.
Pentium® II 450 MHz, AMD K6 III 500, or equivalent.
Memory: 128 MB of RAM.
Video Card: 16 MB DirectX 8.0 - compatible 3D card. Voodoo cards not supported.
Sound Card: DirectX 8.0 compatible sound card.
DirectX: DirectX 8.0 or higher (included on CD).
CD-ROM: 4x or better (not recommended for use with CD-RW's).
Hard Drive Space: 2 GB of hard drive space.
Internet/Network: Properly configured TCP/IP connection at 56 kbps or faster.

However, the mods we run will require more.
I suggest a minimum of:
a 1 gig system
64 meg V-card
256 meg of ram... 512 megs much better. The 128 is not enough even in a stock game.
Broadband only. If you are dial up and get into a game with more than 4 people you will bring the whole deal down. There is a gauge in the lobby and you will be asked to leave or get booted.

I run:
XP 3200
128 meg V-card
1 gig of ram
My Broadband is 6 megs down and 750KB to 1 meg up. Standard broadband is ok--3meg down 300KB up. Entry level DSL is pushing it some--1 meg down 175KB up. In fact an entry level DSL cannot host game of more than 4 people. Standard cable's max will be 16 players. (But no mass assult mods.) A few of use who have the bigger pipes and decent machines can host to 34 gamers.

If you do join in keep in mind that soon I will be back in the field for a few weeks at night. Nevertheless, I will still be able to set up a server from time to time and help you learn the ropes.

Give me a yell if you are interested. I can call into your country toll free if you have a problem with set up.

Olds,

I just might take you up on that offer. I'm currently addicted to World of Warcraft, and I have battlefield 2 sitting on a shelf wondering if it will be getting any love soon.

Too many games and not enough time [;)]

Don't be surprized to hear from me in the near future.

Anytime....

If you can run BF2 then you will have no problem running GR.

From what I understand there are like 5000 servers for BF2~~~! I tried the original and it just flat turned me off. I like the concept of that type of game play, but the weapons were so unrealistic.

I know of one patch that is out for BF2 and one more they are holding back until Oct I believe.

RedStorm/ ubi are saying that the PC will get GR3... I sure hope so. We got skipped in GR2. It was only for the box.

CS,

My son has been too. Must say some of the finest graphics I have seen for an online game, AND it runs really well on dial-up. Love the premise of the game. He has unplugged it for now since school has started. Here I go again. I am so fortunate to have a son like I have. He knows whats coming down the pike. He is retaking his ACT (has a 29 already)in October and he has to write several essays for admissions and scholarships. Dang I am proud of him. He has already been excepted to John Brown University, it seems he is going to pursue his degree in Computer Science. WARNING to all that that will be on this board for the next several months I am warning you that this Dad will go off on long dissertations on the wonders of his son and at times looking for some pity as I put my first son in school. So be here for warned!

Thank you.

GR Gold has been ordered and I expect delivery Friday or Monday next.

As for GR2, it is really good on XBox. Is it wrong to be a 30 something addicted to video games?? But hey, a guy has to do something whilst waiting for that Brisket to cook [:)]

CS,

I have one thing to say, as your kids get older it only gets worse. Must say this college thing is messing with this dad, nothing can prepare you for this. I been kind of catching my self looking at my son and tearing up. So proud but so sad, wouldn't trade it for the world. I edited his senior page last night at my office, I was a blubbering, snot slinging mess. Life-it is good.

It isn't just you. They actually have a name for it:
http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Empty_nest_syndrome?OpenDocument.

I know my wife and I both experienced Empty Nest when my son went off to New Orleans on a Full Ride Track Scholarship. We were pushing University of Oregon, and actually had driven there with him at least 3-4 times, and had him registered. He was offered scholarship there after 1st year, but then a friend he ran with talked him into coming to New Orleans and join fraternity with him, etc.

Off to New Orleans he went, our plans dashed...Who could complain, N.O. was free, UofOregon was going to cost big bucks. Naturally we got to hear about the wild doings there by long distance, and he came home a couple of times a year, but it was terrible for the first months he was gone.

Now he is back home--just moved back home from Chico, and nice to see that he has grown into a responsible adult, but those times were hard, and I know what you are going through.

I don't know why he went to N.O. . Hell, they didn't even have a football team, and man could that kid run...In High School, ran 10.375 sec. 100M. 21 Sec. 200M and 46 sec 400meters. He went to state meets and knew Marion Jones and all the other fast ones. Sure would have been nice to see him run competitively. We just heard about it.

You know, that distance away really helps him grow...parents will be crazy, but it matures them so much...and you will definitely enjoy the change, dispite not wanting them to go so far away!
