Replacing door hinges - question

My lower door hinge broke. I found a couple of threads on using hardware-store hinges, but it seems that I will need to remove/unattatch the original upper hinge if the new hinges are to swing properly. I can't figure out how to do this, any help will be appreciated! Thanks.
