Microsoft has a program that will do a thorough evaluation of your system to let you know if your system can run Window's Vista and what version of Vista is best suited for your current setup. It will also let you know what, if anything, you need to do to bring your system up to minimum standards, what programs on your system that have known compatibility issues and what you need to do with those programs before and/or after installing Vista. After saying that, I always wait about 6 months after the release of a major upgrade of an OS, before I will think about installing it, but looking at Vista's features I will upgrade to it.

Neat link.  I, just yesterday, faced the windows blue screen of death on my laptop.  Of course, I had been working away from the office for about a week without access to backup facilities, so, a lost week of work.  Crap isnt a strong enough word.

I truly hope vista is more stable and Mac like.  Big words from a window proponent since microsofts birth.  I am still smarting from the lost time and cash.

I know how it is losing data.

Vista has gone through so much beta testing, I'm hoping it is 95% stable when it hits the shelves. I want to upgrade as soon as possible, but the evaluation listed a lot of my software that may have compatibility issues.

It's extremely rare, but I've gotten the blue screen of death a couple of times with XP. Generally with a "Fatal hardware failure." message. That message scare the h**l out of me. I've been able to recovery with Norton's Backup and Ghost. Never could find out what caused the errors.

I suspect hardware failure rather than a complete windows-go-boom.  In an attempt at safemode startup I got script on the screen that looked like russian, but had a physical resemblance to the proper screen. Who knows, so it's off to the IT dept for their gentle minstrations.  That should only take a month if I'm on the A-list.   >:(
