Just wondering about some online sites that charge sales tax. Living in Connecticut we have a 6% sales tax. Being on the border of N.Y., I believe they have an 8 1/2% tax. Mass tax I think is lower. But, ordering online for the most part is tax free, hence Amazon. Some companies, out of state, charge tax. Legit or do they just pocket the tax. Might be a dumb question but I gots ta know. ???

HCT,

Whether or not a company is going to collect sales tax is determined by the location of the buyer and whether or not the business you are purchasing an item from has a physical location in that state.

I saw your post abut purchasing your Weber and saving the sales tax by purchasing it through Amazon. Amazon must not have any type of location in your state.

On the other hand, I live in PA and Amazon has a warehouse location in PA. So whenever I order from Amazom I still get hit with sales tax since they are required by the state to collect it. (PA)

I hope that makes sense..lol

Bryan, I noticed that with LLBean now that they have a store in Ct. they tax you on certain items. Never did that before. I guess Cabelas will do the same being that they have a new store here. Thanks for your info.

New York taxes depend on the county you live in. The state sales tax is 4%, and then counties and municipalities add their percentage. My county has an 8% sales tax.

As for online, for the past four years or so, when you file a New York Income Tax return, if you make out of state purchases on-line, they try to collect it when you file.

We get hosed (pardon me) with everything we buy in CA...no matter who we order from. Maybe other Californians know sites that do "a tax free" thing. I don't.

Tax???? What's that?!??!?

Just kidding of course....we pay .0675 here in Homer but if I drive 200 miles to Anchorage, I don't pay ANY tax. However, at around $150-$175 in fuel costs, I only go when I have a LOT of stuff to buy! Next week, I pick up around $2500 in remodeling supplies, so it pays.....throw in a visit to Costco, Sportsman's Warehouse, etc and I REALLY save money (by spending a LOT!) This is beginning to sound like my wife's shopping "wisdom"...... ;) :D ;D  At least we have no income tax...for now?!!?

I understand exactly what your wife thinks...because it's true...get something on sale that you didn't expect to...well...hell you have money to burn!!! :)
