Just was wondering.  Do any of you download .mp3's from a pay-per-dowload site?  I am not looking for ITunes or some other site that you have use there player.  I am just looking for a plain vanilla site where I can go, pay and download my music in .mp3 format.  Thats it, just plain vanilla type service, no trials.  Any sugestions, not interested in P2P.  I just want ot buy .mp3's as simple as I can.

I know a lot of people use the "new" Napster. I think they charge a flat monthly fee.

Napster uses Window Media Audio (WMA) not MP3 format, but you can always convert to MP3. But I feel that WMA is a better format anyway, and most players will play the WMA format.

The problem with Napster is if you cancel your membership you can't play the music that you downloaded on your computer. You will need to burn it to CD's or store it on your MP3 player, prior to canceling your membership.

Believe it or not, Walmart use to get great reviews for their song download service, but only draw back was their lack of selection, but I'm not sure if Walmart is still in the business of selling songs on line.

Hab,

If it is an WMA file that can be coverted to a AUDIO CD format also, is that correct??...  So you are sayng if I get them off my box and put them in WMA, mp3, or audio CD I can continue to play them?  If I have to do it that way I will but again I just don't want to load ANOTHER player.  Man don't go to Sony's site, that has to be one of the largest downloads for a player I have ever seen.

If you want to do it that way you can, but this depends on the player you have, also the download service. For example, I was given an iTunes gift certificate. I had to load their software to down load the music, then I used iTunes to make a CD of the downloaded music, then I used another software program to copy the music from the CD back to my computer in WMA format, now I don't have to use iTunes to play that music. I can afford to do it this way because I have lots of storage space on my computer.

What ever service you subscribe to, read the restrictions carefully. Some restrict how many times you can copy a song once it's been downloaded, some restrict the music to only be played from the computer it was downloaded to; etc.

What player are you using, and do you want to store and play the music for your computer, or CD or MP3 player or all of the above? I rarely download music, but most of the services out there allow you to down load and if you stop using their service you can still play the music you down loaded, but Napster will not let you.

I hate to say this, but my favorite software player is Windows Media Player 10. It's free, fairly easy to use, also plays video formats, and interfaces nicely with my Creative Zen Micro.

Hi,

I haven't tried this one myself yet but it looks good and cheap.

Hab,

You hit it right on the head.  I am the same as you, I don't download much either.  There are just a few times that I would like to.  Completely correct right on their players. And yes about the fine print, that was one of the reasons why I thought I would post.

I can play any type format and can convert any also.  During the day I use WINAMP to listen to the radio but I use MusicMatch JukeBox for all my .mp3 playing, conversions and burning.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Lasse I will look into that.

Lasse,

Thanks for the source.   My son is the download expert.  Prior to Crackdown, he was quite busy.  He probably has about 800 GB of music.  I bought a 60Gig Ipod Photo, and he has dumped about 6000 songs on to it which will keep my busy for some time.  He doesn't listen to country, thus I have a lot of Hip Hop stuff which I have very little interest in.  How many things can rhyme with bitch...you know what I mean.

He is legal now, and I am sure looking for legal sources of attaining current releases.  To make this thread a bit more relavent, it is nice to have the music to listen to while watching the meat in the smoker - iPod in one hand, beer in the other.

Lasse, That is exactly what I am looking for.  Has he had any problems???  Being a Russkie site, I might have a little reservation.

I found this interesting reading to say the least....

I believe in paying people their due, but on the other hand I want to pay a fair price. One of the reasons I have not purchased music is I felt the price was out of line.

When you are the only game in town then you can charge what you want.... looks like someone has caused a change.  Looks like from what I read that there is nothing to stop this. Thus those here will have to get their prices in line or....

I'm with Oldman. I can buy DVDs for what I am paying for CDs. I can extract the audio tracks from the DVDs, and keep it either in CD quality format or rip it down to MP3s. The industry needs a sanity check. After all, they are stamping CDs basically that same way they stamped vinyl, and the material costs are a lot less.

Hi,

I am very concerned about giving my credit card number to anyone but this site accept PayPal among other choices.

I think I'll make a deposit and try it out in the weekend.

My last batch of ribs didn't turn out as wanted. The remote temp that I had inserted in the vent fell off and opened up the vent completely.
I noticed that something was wrong after 2 hours.I came back after driving my sister to the airport and saw that the temp was too low and when I checked I noticed that the vent was flly opened.
The ribs where not equally smoked so I had to smoke for 2 more hours.
They came out fine but not as good as they have been.

I am an IPod and ITunes user and I have to admit that I love them both.  I have no problems with the portability of my music.  I just burn the tracks that I want onto a CD and then re-rip to a different PC.

One of the draw backs of an IPod was that you could copy the music from the actual device to a different PC.........WAS being the key word here because there is now a program called Tune Transfer for IPod that will allow you to dump the contents of your IPod onto a PC.  This is very handy for sharing song between computers.
