Thanks for the tip about dehydrators - went out and purchased what I consider to be a middle of the road model (Open Country/Nesco 500 watt) and all I can say is WOW - BIG difference in control and drying uniformity.  I'm used to the old school cheapy dehydrators without adjustable temperature control that took forever.  These higher end models really do a nice job
