lots of moisture in smoker

just wondering why so much driping

Vent should be open 3/4 to fully open.  Mine is stuck in full open now.

Most of the time that black rain is from having the vent closed to far.

Mine is stuck wide open

I still adjust the vent according to what's in the smoker. Regardless you always should have it open wide enough to prevent smoke and residue from backing into the generator, and wide enough to allow the moisture not to build up. If I'm making jerky, I keep the vent wide open.

For what it's worth- I put an aluminium pie plate on an inverted rack just under the wide open vent to catch anything that may fall.
