I just got done re-wiring my OBS with 14 gague wire and the 900W heater that Da beefman installed.  What I'm wondering is if there is an easy way to make sure that the insulation isn't burning?  When I tested the element, some black smoke came out with the smoking element not even inside the smoke chamber but it didn't smell off (I didn't breath in that much :) ).  Any suggestions would be appreciated since I'd like to smoke some salmon tomorrow.  Thanks!

A lot of times a new element will have some factory oil on it and it will make tons of smoke. They coat the element to keep the elements from oxidizing it.  I would check it  again and do a amp check if you have the equipment to do that  :)

It might just have been the protective oil coating on the element burning off...

Dang keymaster beat me to it ;D
Natural Gas 4 burner stainless RED with auto-clean
2 TBEs(1 natural gas & 1 LP gas)
OBS(Auberins dual probe PID, 900w finned element & convection fan mods)
2011 Memphis Select Pellet Smoker
BBQ Grillware vertical smoker(oven thermostat installed & converted to natural gas)

Thank you for the responses!  I had hoped that was the case but figured before I poisoned anyone I'd double check.  It sure is nice to have a 10 minute warm up time.  :)
