Its starting to get cold and I am about to build an enclosure for my smoker.  I see where most people just vent the smoker straight up through the roof, I was thinking about adding a couple 90's and take my vent out the back.

My question is do you think with the horizontal vent between the 90's will cause black rain?  I figure by venting through the back would make it more weather tight.

I see no problem in venting out the back, but I'd put the horizontal pipe slightly off level,so any black rain would run away from the smoker . I do mine that way with no problem.

Good luck.

Thanks.

I appreciate it, make perfect sense to me.

I started with black stove pipe with 2 90 degree turns.  You can see from the pic I scrapped that idea.  I had smoke backing up into the generator bc I couldn't get the correct draw.  My garage wall is facing west so the prevailing wind was too strong I guess.  Do some research on adding 90 degree turns and what it does to draw.  It's not good...

DaveT261,
90 degree bends should work as long as you have some vertical pipe and a rain cap completing the stack. Nearby structure has an effect on the pipe's ability to draw. ie: A chimney pipe going through a roof has to be 3' above any structure within 10 ft. of it. Otherwise wind affected by the structure can alter or "kill" the draft. Not a bad idea to down slope a horizontal section slightly - 1/4" per foot is plenty. You can drill a small hole in the bottom of the outside elbow for a moisture drip without affecting the draw. A big help in preventing black rain is to insulate your vent pipe over the first elbow at the least, if you're turning horizontal, and if it's an inside location, the whole inside pipe. Insulated flexible ducting works great for this. Used for venting bath fans etc. You can get it at Lowes or HD in what ever size your vent pipe is. Slip the insulation off of the flex pipe inside and slide the insulation on your own vent pipe. I also have a throw-away aluminum pie tin hung below the exhaust vent with a couple of wires to catch any black rain. I smoke a lot of salmon and it produces a lot of moisture during the process. This works quite well.

Salmonsmoker seems to know his stuff.  I thought you meant you were trying to take the vent out the back wall vs roof of your garage.  Per his expertise, I think I was too close to my wall as I didn't take it above the roof line...  Good luck!
