I wish I could get belly for that price. "Canadian Pork Belly" in Canada is $5.00/Lb. :'(  I even tried the rural hog farmers and its the same price.) Damn Canadian government   >:(  ;D

In the US, the price of hogs in the futures market was 93 in December and it is 125 now.
Prices of pork in general has gone crazy.
Apparently there is a virus that is killing young piglets before they can reach slaughtering age and it is causing a decline in the availability of pork.
22 states have reported the virus and farmers are having a tough time getting in front of it.
The prices of all pork products will be continuing to rise over the spring and summer.
:(

If you find a good sale, might be time to stock up the freezer!

That's good advice pjplovedog, the pork prices are starting to go nuts.  Two bellies ago I paid $4.19/lb and the butcher said to expect higher.  Last week another butcher had it on for $3.58/lb, I bought 12 pounds but I should have bought more.

Old Frenchie

Same here in mid-Nebraska.  Today I was quoted $3.99 a pound for a 10 pound box of pork bellies. Our local supermarket had cheap bacon for $6 a pound.

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv) It doesn't bother humans or contaminate the meat for consumption. Apparently older pigs can survive it but it's killing 80-100% of the little piggies. So far it's mostly east and central states especially Ohio. Hasn't made it out west here yet, hope it doesn't.

I bought 48lbs of pork belly earlier this month. I had to order it from the butcher shop, it came from Maple Leaf. Price was $3.75/lb untrimmed. This was in a smaller farming town an hour east of Edmonton.

A Hutterite colony near Holden sells 195lb dressed weight pigs for $225 every Wednesday. This is not butchered at all, just gutted. My husband and I will be getting a pig from them. We butcher our own wild game.

For my Northern Neighbors the pork bellies that The butcher got from a supplier in Canada were from
F.Menard.com of Quebec.  There were 4 in the case, skinless, pre-trimmed and individually wrapped. Average 10 lbs each. Very nice meat. I will post photo when I start curing them.
I also received 4 from Cloverdale Farms in North Dakota , skinless, rough trim also about 10 lbs per slab frozen together as a block. These were .42/pound higher.
