Check it out for an up and coming DVD. The documentary calling Gore's 'New World Religion' into question was available for free viewing not too long ago on YouTube, but ran afoul of copyright with WAG TV, so WAG is putting it out on DVD for US$ 19.99 / £9.99. Haven't seen it yet but looking forward to it.......

I don't claim to be an expert, I am a science teacher, and an environmental science teacher at that.   I have explored all manner of proponents, oponents and data with my classes.  But it is kind of hard to argue with data about warming trends.  While it is true that temperatures have flucuated throughout Earth's history, it has never been to the extent that we are seeing now.  There is a direct correlation between CO2 levels and temperature.  Some of this comes from natural causes, nothing we can do about that.  Some of it is a result of irresponsible clear-cutting of forests, both tropical and temperate which remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.  A lot of it comes from the burning of non-carbon neutral fuels, fossil fuels, etc....  Those things we can do something about.  Again, I am not an expert, look into actual data for yourselves, not just the political mumbo jumbo spewed by both sides.  It is a real phenomenon.  Very few scientists will argue that.  They debate the cause because it is both politically and financially lucrative.  Just my two cents, which again mean very little in the grand scheme of things.  Now, let me go start up my SUV and burn down my oak tree in the front yard. ;D ;D ;D

The Earth has been much warmer in past; Greenland didn't exist and sea levels were much higher. By definition, we have been warming since the last ice age. The question is: to what extent is it anthropogenically driven? We run the fastest computers and codes in the world, but still have to resort to sulfite particulates in the atmosphere to explain why the planet is not as hot as the codes would otherwise indicate.

Of course, the prudent thing to do would be to build more nuclear power plants, but I am in the minority here in California. In fact, it is against the law in California to build a nuclear power plant.

I think this whole global warming is bulls@#t.  The earth has been much warmer in the past than it is now.  It all comes down to Politics and Money.  Think of how many BS jobs have come because of global warming.  Its all about the money.  If you look at a trend of the temps of the earth over long term then anybody could see that the temp goes up and then back down.  I saw a good documentry the other day about it i will try to find the link and post it for yall.

yeah that link posted earlier was the same go to youtube and check it out i must have cought it before they started trying to make money off of it.  it is like a nine part series on youtube

Hopefully this is just healthy discourse, and I am not ruffling any feathers, but global warming is happening.  There is a little process called the scientific method that has shown time and time again that the warming trend we are seeing now is coupled both by a naturally occuring upswing(which by the way if you look at past data, some believe we should have already entered another ice age by now, that's another topic) and by increased amounts of greenhouse gases.  It, unfortunately, is not a hoax.  No scientist worth his degree would argue otherwise.  As I stated earlier they debate the cause of those elevated levels for financial and political gain.  Data is subject to peer review, documentaries are not, even Mr. Gore's.  Look at data, rather than some biased documentary if you want the real story.
In a movie they can spin data any way they want.  For example, elevated CO2 levels have been shown to increase plant growth.  If plants are growing at an increased rate then they should remove the excess CO2 faster than in the past.  That would be great, too bad in the time it takes us to smoke a butt, acres of trees have been removed from the face of the earth(again, I am not against logging, or clear cutting for farming, just saying the chips are stacked against us with this one unless we change some things.)

BTW, not to split hairs, but the ozone hole and global warming are not the same problem.  That's all I got, back to the meat. ;D

You've always provided pretty level-headed information, Malc, and I've always appreciated what you have to say and have subsequently assigned your opinion a higher level of credibility. My own experience is that this forum is great for in-depth discussions dealing with all means of smoking, food hygiene, packaging, etc. and even for some light/humorous discussions of a contemporary subject that has entered the arena of political spice. Based upon my own experience over the last few years, I haven't found it to be fertile grounds for "healthy discourse" of hot topics like global warming, media bias, "neo-con v. secular progressive" type  topics. Too many times, it seems to implode under the pressure of debate, usually wounding a few and causing the permanent or temporary "I quit" syndrome. That's as it should be since this is a smokers forum and those kind of discussions can be more opinion forming with friends, stout, and smoked salmon on the deck.....danged computers filter the productive spice out of such discourse anyway..... ;) ;D
