Title: My idea for a Hoagie!
Post by: PensacolaJim on May 05, 2009, 06:30:18 AM
An easy sandwich I want to share. A nice addition to your next smoke.

I took some Johnsonville beer brats, Flattened them out, maintaining
the original length.

Spread them with a layer of Dijon mustard.

Added a layer of Sauerkraut.

Rolled them up!

Wrapped with a couple slices of bacon.

Smoked for 2 hours.

Placed them in Hoagie Rolls.

These were great!

Jim,
You are killing me!  Where the heck have you been all this time?  What a great looking meal.  A couple of questions if you please.  First, how many brats are in each roll?  You smoked for 2 hours, at what temp and did you have to continue to cook them after the smoke period to get the brat meat done?

Those look incredible and I am definitely making those.  Thanks Jim and your entry in the Iron Chef is just as incredible.

Thanks KyNola,
I used one brat for each sandwich, smoked at 220 with Hickory.

Did I forget the ice cold beer?

I'm doing a dozen of these this weekend.  In addition to the kraut, going to add onions and smoked white cheddar cheese.  I swear I could easily do two dozen and there be absolutely none left as everyone I have told about this recipe has requested one.

Thanks again Jim!

Larry,
Since you were all bummed out. I desided to do mine on the grill with hickory smoke. I posted the pics under PJ's Hoagie.

WOW, Great responces! It was so simple, but oh soooo good.
Let me know how your variation turns out.  ;)
This could be a good one for newbies to get started with. I had my smoker for a month now. I never smoked anything before that.
The forum members sure helped me get off to a good start, Thanks!

Jim,
Are you sh_____g me? You've never owned a smoker before and your 10th post was a killer entry in the Iron Chef competition and followed it up with a post that has 10.5 and me doing backflips over your bacon wrapped brat roll ups?

Can't wait to see what you come up with once you have some experience under your belt.   :D  :D

OK... I have seen a few of you all have tried these... I just finished making mine and getting ready to put in my DBS.  I had a devil of a time rolling these.  I tried plastic wrap and also wax paper.  Rolling them was rough.  Wrapping them in bacon was nearly impossible.  Any tips or secrets that would make it easier next time?

Thanks all.

A Third or Fourth Hand!! Make your patty alittle thicker and that might help keep the sides from blowing out.

So could the be assembled the night before and then smoked the next day?  I'd like to be able to make them all tonight and wrap them up so I can throw them in the smoker in the morning.  Trying to avoid the rain so thats why I ask.

I do not see why not, as long as they were kept cold everything should be fine.

Great!!!  Thanks for the quick reply.  This is why I love this forum.  Everyone is so helpful and quick to give an answer.  A big part of the reason why I bought my OBS.
