Today My 8 year old son and I decided to make bagels. We had a lot of fun and the bagels turned out great!
I love to teach my kids that food does not have to be made by someone else. Meat does not grow in fields wrapped in plastic and bread always costs less and tastes better when made at home. My son as you will notice insisted that his raised thumb be in almost every photo.

It's great to get kids involved in cooking. As you said, they learn there's something other than a frozen box or can of stuff that magically shows up in a supermarket.
The bagels look good. Good pics too. I might have done a couple with "the works".
"Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime"
Great job on the Bagels and taking the time to teach!
Tell your son ........Thumbs Up!

Very nice!
Those are beautiful! I've got the lox and cream cheese to go with them + a rather nice champagne. Most impressive! 8)
They look real good. I'll take mine with butter please.
"Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish, and he will sit in the boat and drink beer all day."
I would send you all some but I am sure they would be stale by then.

Beautiful.....

Now that is great!!
the bagels look great, do you use a special bread recipe for bagels
4 cups bread flour
1 Tbls sugar
1 1/2 tsps salt
1 Tbls vegetable oil
2 tsps instant yeast
1-1/4- 1-1/2 cups of warm water.
Everyone goes into the pool at once, mix till all flour is Incorporated and knead for an additional 8-10 min (till sough appears elastic and smooth).
Don't forget to add baking soda to the water or it just won't get t hat true bagel crust.
Some Good Quality time with the youngin and something to show for it. Well Done PL
Nice, very nice...

How much baking soda do you use?
That is my question as well. Nobody in this house knows much about bread making. We have a bread machine, but the crust always turned out so hard that we have not used it in years. Would appreciate any secrets you guys may have.
I used 12 litres (3.17 gallons) of water and added 2 tblsp pf baking soda. It seems like a rather large amount of water but the last thing you want to do is poach your bagel so use the largest stock pot you have. The baking soda serves to create the crust on the bagel. If you happen to use too much you will end up with a large pretzel, if so just add some salt and pretend that it was your plan.
Those look great Punch, great work!
;D
I do like cream cheese on mine!
These look freakin amazing
I am hopelessly addicted to bagels
I have to eat one at least every day, usually loaded with cream cheese
I justify the cream cheese as my source of calcium since milk makes me gag
Here is an interesting thought....
What if they were baked off on a pizza stone in a Bubba?
The best bagels come from wood fired ovens and the Bubba might be able to at least provide a charcoal fired oven?
I have to give this a try on a rainy day when I am not playing golf
Wheels are turning now, bagel wheels that is
We used to call Cherrios "Bagel seeds"
My wife and I enjoy our bagel and lox, we have it every weekend.
I make 10 -15 lbs of lox at a time.
I bet it would even be better with freash homemade bagels
This really is simple to do. Give it a try you will never want to eat a store bought bagel again.
nicely done

lol, probably be making a few pretzels myself.
I'm really impressed. What a great job and lesson for your son. I will try this with my granddaughter. Thanks for sharing.
