Today My 8 year old son and I decided to make bagels. We had a lot of fun and the bagels turned out great!

I love to teach my kids that food does not have to be made by someone else. Meat does not grow in fields wrapped in plastic and bread always costs less and tastes better when made at home. My son as you will notice insisted that his raised thumb be in almost every photo.

Flour meats yeast

All kneaded and cut into 4 ounce pieces

A little rest for 10 minutes

After 10 time to shape into bagels

Another rest 20 minutes

Time to bring the water to a boil

Sesame seeds and poppy seeds ready to meet bagel

20 minutes later bagel meets water for 1 minute

time to flip and one more minute

bagel meets the seeds

all dressed and ready for a 425 degree oven for 10 minutes

10 minutes has passed and it's time to flip

after 10 minutes they are all done and looking great!

The money shot, what fun.... ;D 8)

It's great to get kids involved in cooking.  As you said, they learn there's something other than a frozen box or can of stuff that magically shows up in a supermarket.

The bagels look good.  Good pics too.  I might have done a couple with "the works".

Those are beautiful!  I've got the lox and cream cheese to go with them + a rather nice champagne.  Most impressive! 8)

I would send you all some but I am sure they would be stale by then.

the bagels look great, do you use a special bread recipe for bagels

punchlock

4 cups bread flour

1 Tbls sugar

1 1/2 tsps salt

1 Tbls vegetable oil

2 tsps instant yeast

1-1/4- 1-1/2 cups of warm water.

Everyone goes into the pool at once, mix till all flour is Incorporated and knead for an additional 8-10 min (till sough appears elastic and smooth).

Don't forget to add baking soda to the water or it just won't get t hat true bagel crust.

How much baking soda do you use?

That is my question as well.  Nobody in this house knows much about bread making. We have a bread machine, but the crust always turned out so hard that we have not used it in years. Would appreciate any secrets you guys may have.
