If you don't know what they are, look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naga_Jolokia_pepper
My crop is finally starting to ripen. I'd be happy to send a couple out to my friends on the forum over the next couple of weeks as they color up.
If you'd like a couple, please PM me your mailing address. OU812 is getting the first couple.
Be warned. Use gloves and use sparingly. One article said they're about 500 times hotter than a Jalapeno at around one million Scoville units.
I just might have to try some of them, I need to burn open my ulcer so I can take some time off of work.
Do I hear ADT's? ::) ;) ;D
In 2007, Guinness World Records certified the Naga Jolokia as the world's hottest chili pepper, 400 times hotter than Tabasco sauce.
Holy sheep dip!! 400 times hotter than Tabasco!!
Wonder how it would improve a Bloody Mary!!
I'm In!!! Send me a couple Arnie. I will see how much damage I can do to myself.
In theory, these peppers make a habanero look like candy ;D

The peppers are going out tomorrow for those of you that have requested them. I might be able to throw a 'surprise' pepper in there too.
Please be careful with them. Gloves are a must. Use them sparingly. Enjoy.
Thanks Arnie

Probably but I have no experience there. They're slow growers so you should start them indoors in mid-Feb. Once I got them outside in June in an Earthbox, they really took off but they're pretty slow to ripen in our area.
The peppers don't have many seeds. Just handle with care.
Sorry about your workers Icerat4. ;D ;D
The peppers are native to India. They dry 'em, grind 'em and put them in a spray or grenade. They're used for crowd control.
From Wiki:
As a weapon
In 2009, scientists at India's Defence Research and Development Organisation announced plans to use the chillies in hand grenades, as a non lethal way to flush out terrorists from their hideouts and to control rioters. It will also be developed into pepper spray as a self defense product.[24][25]
R. B. Srivastava, the director of the Life Sciences Department at the New Delhi headquarters of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (who also led a defense research laboratory in Assam), said trials are also on to produce bhut jolokia-based aerosol sprays to be used by potential victims against attackers and for the police to control and disperse mobs.[26]
So instead of an ABT, it would be a WMD?
OMG.....anyone going to try to make ABT out of them? May have to change the "Atomic" to something else. Nuke? NBT? That may not even be close to the heat. :o
thanks again ..if ya have any more i will gladly pay ya for some more..these are awesome..not only hot ..but the fun factor is great too ;D

OK, I have some green ones left. They aren't gonna ripen at this time of year. The first three PM's with an address gets some.
Got my reds and am heading for greens.

Thanks Arnie!
Am I too late to get in on the order? Even a few seeds?
Sorry for the late request.
Carter
The next mailing will be this coming Monday. I have a couple getting ripe but they're dedicated to Gizmo. He was out of town this week.
Kevin - you're welcome and you'll get a few more.
Carter - PM me your mailing address. You are second on the list.
I grew these from seeds. If anyone wants a nice selection of seeds, go to http://www.pepperjoe.com/shoppingcart/html/pepper.html
They are quality seeds.
Please enjoy - in moderation :D
Mine showed up today Thanks Arnie
If you still have any peppers left my son-in-law is from Kerala, now living in the States and would very much appreciate these. Nothing I ever give him seems hot enough.
Thanking you in advance for your generosity, I will gladly pay in advance for any postage/shipping charge.

Richard, just PM me the name and address of your SIL. There is no charge.
Here are a couple of pics of my "pepper garden" if anyone is interested. It's a very over crowded Earthbox. It contains poblano, cherry, hot banana and Peter peppers as well as the Jolokia peppers.

What are the dimensions of that box? I'm going to try to grow some again.
Thanks
Kevin,
You can find the box at http://www.earthbox.com/
Thanks Arnie, they look a little pricey, but it looks like you're getting good results from them.
I use my AEROGAEDEN to start the Jolokia seeds. When the plants get strong I transplant. I have 2 beautiful plants that are just starting to ripen. I pray the weather holds out so I don't lose them, there are quite a few hanging out...
Anybody have any advice should i have to pick them premature?
Thanks...

Yeah they are a little pricey. You can likely save on shipping by buying them without the potting mix and getting it locally.
Raye Minor had an article in a past newsletter on making your own out of 5 gallon pails. It's the same principle as the Earthbox.
My boxes are overcrowded; 7 tomatoes in the other one. But, the plants look so small when you plant them ... :P

I don't think they're going to ripen much more at this time of year. Give them as much sun and heat as you can.
I don't have a comparison of heat in the green vs the red ones and probably won't get one. I've shipped all of my red ones out.
I'd certainly pick them once the night time temps hit the high 30's. You might try putting the green ones in a brown paper bag along with a ripe banana. That should help to ripen them some.
I started my seeds indoors in mid Feb. They started in those little seed starter pucks with the netting, then went into bathroom size paper cups and finally into the Earthbox in early June. I ended up with 35-40 ripe ones. I had 3 or 4 plants.
The last of the peppers I'm sending were mailed out today.
The recipients include:
Gizmo, delayed a week per his request.

Everyone got a bonus "Peter" pepper. Enjoy.
That was very kind of you!
Question: If I take some of the seeds from this years crop, what is the best way to store them for next spring? Should I dry them a bit in the dehydrator?
Last year I just put them in a ziplock and some of the seeds got moldy...

I haven't done it yet so all you're getting here is opinion.
As you probably already know, they don't have many seeds so they should be pretty easy to 'capture'. Also the peppers are dry inside, unlike, say a tomato.
I'd simply split the pepper in half and let it sit for a few days. Then put the seeds on a paper tower and let them sit a few days. Finally, I'd wrap them up in the towel and put them in a warm, dry place. Maybe in a cabinet over or next to your kitchen range.
Getting moldy in the zip top bag sounds like they weren't dry enough. If using a dehydrator, I probably wouldn't go over 100
o or so.
Good luck!
Awesome Arnie, looking forward to the peppers. Thanks for the delay as well. ;)
When I keep seeds for the next year. I put them on a paper plate till they are dry, then store in a small envelope with the kind of seed printed on, so I do not mix them up before planting.
Thanks alot got mine today ..AWESOME...We are having so much fun with these... ;D

Boy, that was quick. The post office guy marked the envelopes as 'perishable', maybe that helped. Keep having fun. ;D
I sent some to Bavind in Canada a week ago last Monday and he still hasn't gotten them. Must be a customs thing.

Probably have now burned through the box.......

The peppers may have knocked out the sniffer dogs :-\
Got my second batch today. Thanks again Arnie!!!
So now the burning question is. What's the secret pepper ???? :D
Kev,
Go here: http://www.pepperjoe.com/shoppingcart/html/pepper.html and look for the Peter Pepper. Mine are not as anatomically correct as some of the pics.
I received the package today. Thanks Arnie.
Wow, those are some large Nagas. I was expecting a shorter pepper like a habanero. Your earth boxes were good producers.
Customs must be enjoying the peppers. lol ;D
You can check out http://www.pepperjoe.com/shoppingcart/html/pepper.html for some info on them.
The peppers have very few seeds and so the seeds are pretty expensive. Scrape out some of the seeds, let them dry and then start them indoors - late winter. They take a while to get going but once they do, they grow like weeds.
I've already sent out about 40 of them. I probably have another 20 green ones on the bushes. I was considering picking, drying and grinding to a powder, then sprinkling that on my brother-in-law's burger. ;D ;D

Well that's a bummer Dave. When I sent yours, I had to fill out a real simple customs form. I went to different PO in town for Monday's shipment. I had to fill out a three part form. Nothing like the gov'ment.
Please let me know if you don't get them by the end of this week. I'll find some way to get you some.
-- Arnie
Last time I shipped to Canada, I had to fill out the huge 3 part form..
Time before that, it was just a tiny little form the size of a post-it note.

ROTFLMAO ;D :D ;D
That's a riot Arnie!!!! I love it!
They have arrived. I tried a small piece of one and had to check in the mirror if the hole when right through my tounge or just felt like it. Thanks You very much. I am going to try and save the seeds to see if they will grow here in the Great White North. Thanks again
I'm glad you finally got them Dave. Thanks for the reply. Boy, two weeks. I could have driven them up there faster.
The seeds need moisture and a warm temp to get going. After that, it's mainly a lot of sun and heat. Mine started out pretty scrawny looking and then turned into 2 foot bushes when they took off in the summer.
Sorry about your tongue. ;D These are not biting peppers.
Uh oh, there's some new heat in town.

Thanks for the info Kevin. It looks interesting. :D
They sound about like a ghost pepper. Now I like hot stuff but if they are like a ghost pepper I don't want know part of eating one. They are only good for a very small dab to add spice to something any thing you have to wear gloves to handle will be even harder on your insides not to mention the next day. good luck to those who try to eat them plain. :'(
