Before I post these pictures, I want to warn you of some of the dangers that could happen.
A FIRE! When I did this I baby set my smoker the entire smoking process in case some-
thing happened. Nothing did, but it could have. I love my Bradley's and wouldn't want any
thing bad to happen to them.
This is the smoke that all this came from: http://forum.bradleysmoker.com/index.php?topic=24040.0
SouthernSmokes and I talked about something similar to this back in October or so and then
we both got busy dealing with ailing Mom's. I had forgotten about it till I was up late one nite
reading old post and Hady had stated he had put charcoal inside his smoker. So I thought I
would try it this way and to see what happens. I was fully aware I was taking a chance and if
something bad happened, it would be my fault and not Bradley's.
My 6 rack-er is permanently hooked up to a cold smoke adaptor and as you know the hose
from the cold smoke adaptor pushes the cold smoke adaptor away from the Bradley cabinet
so the only heat that was transferred was thru the cold smoke adaptor hose. Actually the
cold smoke adaptor was very warm but not hot. I completely close up the hole where the
smoke generator goes into the cold smoke adaptor to help keep down the chances of a fire.
I took the water bowl and added 8 pieces of charcoal that were about 1/2 glowing from a
chimmney starter. To that I added two or three pieces of the mesquite wood and the smoke
started flowing. I didn't set out to try and create a smoke ring, I was more interested in what
it would taste like. Thru the 5 hours of smoke time I added 6 to 7 more pieces of charcoal
and wood as it would burn down. Ok, On to the PICS!

Now that I have done it, it won't be the norm for my Bradley smoking. I love the simple way that
the Bradley lets me smoke. Will I do it again? You bet! Just not on a regualr bases.
Nice to see finish product came out great. Nice ring

Cool!
I wonder if using charcoal pellets right on the puck burner would do the same thing... Hmmmm.
Now that is just too cool!!
One more of the great things about this forum is that within the vast experience of its members experiments are shared keeping new ideas flowing and some great food sitting on the tables of our loved ones! Thanks Sonny (and to all)! ;D
Now that is one great lookin smoke ring.
Looks great Sonny...love the smoke ring!
Well you know!
Ditto x 5
You da smoke ring monkey :o
That's awesome! It's amazing to see all of the different things that can be done with this smoker.
Kudos to you Sonny :)
So that's what a smoke ring looks like.....
Carolyn
that will work, i have put one or two pieces of charcoal on the top edge of the v-tray before and got a smoke ring. but like you mentioned, keep an eye on it, would not want to cause a flare up.
It does look better than the pictures you sent me Sonny.
I would just like to remind folks as Sonny and I discussed it is NOT recommended that you do this. There is a high probability that you could have a fire in your Bradley as it is not designed for this type of usage.

Huh? You got a formula for this?
I'm trying to decipher this in
feet from the cabin... :o

Just dont want someone to try doing this with a homemade cardboard cold smoke chamber and end up burning their house down. Or starting a grease fire in their Bradley. Although it does look like a really nice smoke ring.

I call my Ins Co before I started and they said they covered fires from cookers.
Then it was on! ;D

Nice insurance folks!
What kinda
accent didja use to pronounce
Crown Royal?
So if I understand you correctly, you had the heat coming from the element, and the smoke from the cold smoke adapter where you had some charcoal and wood in the bowl.
So where is the risk of fire? Hot ash or sparks from the charcoal fire? Would a spark screen like used on chimneys in fire zones solve that concern?Maybe put it between the adaptor box and the duct?

CR you are nuts but my kind of guy. Nice smoke ring and great pics. I have set a couple of turkeys on fire before. No mercy for those poor birds. Some times we learn the hard way.
KC
Like I said, I thought there was a chance a smoke ring could happen
but had forgot about it until I sliced it. What an eye opener'. :o :o
I delayed posting the results until I talked to my lawyer, Gods
of the forum, and my bartender.
Just don't want anyone to have a bad experience by something I do.
Always be safe in your smoking. The smoke ring is eye candy.
That is really interesting and I do understand the concern about the fire issue...wow...good for you CRG...I may try that as my cold smoke box is pretty permanent too...but I have a question...does the ring change the flavor or just for presentation? Well...other than the fact that you got a ring ...which is kool by itself...hmmmmm
The smoke ring is eye candy.
Something that just don't happen in the Bradley.
Was a fun experiment.
Gotta question - since it has been stated many, many times on this forum that a smoke ring adds absolutely nothing to the flavor - why all the interest in one??? Doesn't make sense to me. Just curious.
Geeeez, talk about covering your ASSets.... The smoke ring looks great and that brisket looks so moist. Guess I'm gonna have to buy some charcoal...
Looks very good and a nice smoke ring. I haven't had it like that since I quit using a wood smoker. I agree with being safe. But really like this site because of the experiments and mods people do.

I agree. It was something fun to try. I sure like the looks of it. I thought
a few people that like to experiment would enjoy seeing it. Maybe I wrong.
Like I said, it's not something I would do all the time, too much work.
And I am a lazy type guy.
Why do some people buy Silver Chevrolet Trucks and some buy Red?
Why not make them all the same color and not give people choices.
good looking piece of meat
Well...I still think i's pretty damn kool that he got a ring...I wouldn't try it...but god bless him for that surprise!! :)
Nice results. Another member had similiar results by placing a few charcoals inside his Bradley.

STC,
You would get the charcoal flavor, but it is not likely you will get the ring. You need to burn the pellets at a higher temperature to produce enough nitrogen dioxide that will interact with the protein to form a noticeable ring.
YES
You can get a smoke ring with pellets on the slide. I have done it with butts and pecan pellets in my 6 rack.
