Title: Im 46 years old
Post by: Keymaster on June 09, 2012, 07:08:26 PM
And I have never had a Nathans hot dog until today.... I have seen them on a few other forums and every one talks highly of them. I have went to their website and considered having some shipped to me within the last year but could not justify the price. Well let it be known that the Safeway in Puyallup Washington has Nathans Hot dogs TODAY :) :) :) I was so dang excited that I forgot to get Hotdog buns so I had to use a hamburger bun but it worked out great and these are definately by far the best hotdog I have ever had!!!

They look great. Too bad a don't care for grilled dogs. For some reason I only enjoy my tube steaks boiled. I think it is cause the grease cooks out. I have the same trouble with breakfast sausage too except I can eat about three if they are fried.

Can't remember when I first had a Nathan's dog but I know it was in the early-mid 1950s.  My paternal grandparents lived in Brooklyn and no visit was complete without a trip to Coney Island and no trip to Coney Island was complete without a "Nathan's Famous."

Oh yeah! You young wippersnappers! LOL

I like to cook them in bacon grease. I always drain and keep bacon grease for cooking several things. i think Bacon would make ice cream taste better. LOL

Funny you should mention that. We have been experamenting with different chocolate covered bacons and last weekend took 6 sliced of it, broke it up into small pieces and put it in some home made custard. OMG was it fantastic.

Years ago Olds sent us a cute hot dog cooker/bun warmer. We use it all the time and Ann only uses Nathans or Hebrew Nationals on it. Love those doggies  ;D

ice - I know it's cold up there but there are better ways to warm your buns (and I'm refraining from saying anything about warming wieners).

Stopping by to visit you on the islands was a WHOLE bunch nicer way to get warm than a camp fire turttle man  ;D Save some of that local rum for me cause we plan on stopping back by again!!  ;)

How can you not love a guy who takes what was essentially a rude & lewd remark at his expense and reworks it into an invitation to my house?

Any time, ice (I'll have rum but you'll have to bring your own bun warmer).

Well I am 62 and just finished my first Nathans hot dog and you are correct they are great. I love that intense taste. So here is my question of all you sausage makers. Has anyone ever made a hot dog that they would honestly say matches the great taste. I would love to be able to make these.

X2 all these meat creators and no recipe! What the... is every one going to mixes these days. And Kirby being the sausage man you are I would think your already working on them. Never had one so going to have to try. my taste though leans towards a pork, chicken, turkey dog rather then all beef. But have lots of comments on my home made ones. Still not exactly what I want yet!  So i'll be watching for the recipe here.

Find some of them and give them a try. I just have not found the recipe yet. I have read the label and they put all sorts of stuff in them but obviously they do not tell what the spice blend is. I was just hoping that someone had it down and would share the recipe.
I am still having some problems with my back so it will be quite a while before I get to make some sausage. I helped Pete last night or I should say, I was there. I did not do much but let him try my foot controlled stuffer. This is the first time I have had to use it myself. I built it just before my surgery and had not had a chance to use it. I have loaned it out a couple of times but I wanted to see it work in person. I will have to say it sure makes things simple. Both hands are free to work on the stuffing. We took some video but we will have to have some time to get it edited.

But was hoping one of you gurus would have already.  Any one got any thing close or not? Other wise starting from scratch. LOL Sounds kinda like a challenge boys. Who can get a copy cat first. LOL

I have been looking at the same places and they have this well hidden. We might have to work this one up ourselves. This will definitely need to take some small batches.
Paul you might take a look at this one it looks kind of good. It might use a little good grade phosphate to help hold the moisture.

I have already put this on the excel sheet. I will send you a copy.

Yes or maybe these even. With the new spread sheet the small batches will be easy. May be one or two dogs at first even. Pm sent!

The spread sheet that I sent you was for the Dakota dogs on the same site. Both recipes are very close.

http://www.lets-make-sausage.com/best-hot-dog.html

these have some ingredients that would help control moisture.
I guess these are the ones that I probably would try. I just can't make sausage right now with the condition of my back. My wife would kill me if I took on a task like this right now.

Well i'll try both. But as I said Im only going by the label of ingredients and the info they gave. I have the wife going to pick up a couple packs to taste. As I have never tried them. Just hear a lot of people comment on how good. What I read said all beef. And don't sound like a lot of spices. So I need to taste them. But right now I am on hold too! I started having sever pain in my head to the point I couldnt stand it any longer. So the are trying to get me into a Neurologist. Says it could be my brain leaking blood. I think its the arthritis in my 5 now bad vertebra in my neck.I had three. But also have Ru arthritis and its making it lots worse. So I have to even sneak on here while the wifes out side LOL. Wants me to do as doctor said. Be a good little boy and lay down and take your meds. LOL You would think after 36 years she would have started laughing out load too. But she is in her seriously concerned mood..NOT GoOD. You had to see this doctor too! Right out of Dougie Hozzer and had a bad attitude to boot! But pulled it on the wrong dude! So now another doctor. LOL So soon as I can I'll get on this. Hope you feel better soon.
