I just picked up a couple of new redi check maverick smoker thermometers to replace my dead ones. I can't seem to find the wiring post on the antenna upgrade. Can you folks help me out? :) Thanks.
Pat, I did not know the antenna could be upgraded. I'm looking at the web site now and found a bunch of manuals. I also got an email address if you want to fire off an email to them.
[email protected]I'll keep looking, I assume you have the ET-73?

Pat,
Here's some things I found:

SD, the second link is what I think he needs. I never heard of anyone doing that before but its a great idea if you can solder.
I may have to open up my ET7 to see if its possible to upgrade it also.

Thanks for the link, Nepas! Now that's something I think I could do and not screw it up. I often wondered why in the world they put the on/off switch underneath the cover. Makes no sense to me.

The switch is not weather resistant. That's why they put it under the cover. a more expensive sealed switch would drive the price up ?
I forgot about the antenna mod. I'll try to get that on the recipe site.

Could be, FL. I never leave the transmitter in a location where it's in a position to get wet anyways. If there is a mist or snow that is getting onto my smoker, I've always taken a sandwich bag and placed it in there. Works well enough to keep it from getting wet. I am not a fan of that switch anyways and will be doing the mod on it so that I don't have to keep taking the cover off.
On a side note, has anyone else had problems with the reception or transmission of their ET-73? I've never had a problem but I've always assumed that's because my smoker is on a covered porch attached to the house, so the distance of my transmission is never really over 50' max. I could understand why Iceman would need the upgrade to transmit from his ideal smokehouse setup to the house but I'm wondering if the upgrade is worth the risk of breaking it?
I just purchased one a week ago along with a Auber PID and did a test run to make sure both worked. My smoker is in my garage which is 24' x24' and is insulated and unattached from my house about 30' away. With everything setup I input some times and temps on my Auber PID and set up my Maverick and went in the house and waited to see if it worked. I would guess I was 60-70 feet away from my smoker and going through 2 walls and it seemed to work great. The true test will be this weekend when I make some summer sausage. :)

thanks for the reminder. And NePA thanks for that vid link. That is a mod I need to do. Honestly I stopped using the 73 and use a simple probe because of that dang switch under the cover. Just not convenient. I need to do the antennae mod also. smoker is in garage and about 35 feet away on other side of exterior wall I don't get a signal at all. It is real annoying, I need to go into the garage a lot. About a year ago I was doing a big load of Butt and I got up at 4 AM and heard the alarm going off but not till I got into the garage. Just a slight overdone. But all worked out great.
Thanks again.
Anytime gang.

this is a non mod question, if i am doing 2 pork roasts can i use another internal probe in place of the chamber probe so i can watch
internal temp on both?
Hi all,
New to the site, old smoker, most recently 3yrs with obs. I just purchased a 6 rack dbs, Auber pid and maverick 73. I appreciate your posts, and I'm sure that I will benefit from your sharing information and experiences with this equipment. I've also found the on/off switch under the cover if the 73 to be inconvenient.

Yes. When I purchased my Raptor/Guru (Competitor), I ordered another meat probe so the ET-73 can monitor two internal meat temperatures. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that you have to set the probe that is hooked to the "smoker" plug first and that temperature has to be equal or higher then the temperature you are going to set for the probe that is connected to the "food" plug.
Thanks for binging this back up guys. I know in the original thread I tried and tried with no improvement. I ordered a new ET73 last summer and kinda forgot about it sitting here. So today I performed surgery on it. I soldered it across the 3 points, used 22 gauge wire, and measured the wire 6.5 inches from the solder joint....
Voila!... works perfect! ;D
My smokers are in my detached garage which is about 65 feet from the house. Both the garage and house are stucco which means there is stucco wire on the exterior walls. None of the ET73 units would ever read anywhere in my house.
Now... I can read it anywhere in the house! ;D
I have no idea why it didn't work on my old one so I decided to rip it apart and investigate. I had a look at my solder joints under a magnifying glass and they looked fine but I decided to re-solder them anyway... Voila!... It works too! ;D
Go figure... even though the solder joints looked fine one of them obviously wasn't.
Thanks again for bringing this up... I had just forgot about it.

Mike,
Did you use anything to hold the wire up like a piece of hollow tubing, like in the instructions?

This time I used some 22 gauge solid core copper wire. Mainly because I had it around but it does stand up nice. I just had to be careful when putting it together as not to stress the circuit board. Worked great though.
Mike
Thanks, that sounds good.

With my PID in place, I don't feel the need to monitor the cabinet temp any more, so if I have 2 pieces of meat in the smoker, I just jam the cabinet probe into the second piece. Works fine without having to buy a second food probe.
thanks habs and tiny tim,
i was kinda wondering about the cabinet probe...i will give that a shot next time around.
