I've been using a free Anti-malware program. Seems to work well for me.
AntiMalwarebyte's Anti-malware
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Good luck.
Pens beat me to it while I was looking up the download link, just download and install the free version from there if you have any malware it will pick it up for you, great program I run it all the time

I've had some problems with Malware that was only removable by a rootkit detector.  I downloaded AVG rootkit and it took care of stuff Symantec, Spybot, and other commercial stuff couldn't touch.

Free download here:

Good luck!

If she is running Vista, why is Windows update trying to install XP IE 8?  And 64-bit at that.

Is her Vista a 64-bit OS?  Not many people I know run the 64-bit OS unless they are gamers or need apps that require more than
3 gigs of RAM.  I'm running Vista 64-bit at home with IE 8 and have no problems.

Could it be that she is only running a 32-bit version and that's why it's erroring out on her?

she has vista.

her IT guy at her work said she might have some sort of malware running keeping her from the updates
If you can upgrade to Windows 7. Vista is a piece of chit. I not suggesting  an overlay install,  but a complete hard drive wipe and clean install of Win 7. Your life will be a whole lot easier after that.
