Need some help for my wife. Her laptop wont do some certain MS updates. she gets an error saying blaa blaa  cant update this file.

I will try to post what update she cant get.

Thanks

Yeah, let us know.

My wife's computer was downloading and applying the SAME update, requiring a reboot, every day.  I finally turned off auto-update.

I leave automatic updates on, but I throttle them back a bit...

From IE, go to Windows update.

Click 'custom':

I only have one 'High Priority' update waiting.

Uncheck it, and check the box that says "Don't show this update again".

You might have to do this to a bunch of the updates, and then let them come through one at a time.

And when you apply the updates, make sure you pick the 'advanced' option, and you can control what gets installed there...

It just wont install any updates, says i need to contact MS and have a folder rewritten.

Way to techy for me so i just leave it alone

Can you get a screen shot of that?   Sounds fishy..

When the message is up on the screen, press ALT+PRT SCRN.   Fire up paintbrush (click start + run and type 'pbrush') and paste that image in.  Save as a JPEG, and you can upload it to PhotoBucket from her laptop.

I'll concur with STC on this one.

Smells fishy.

If nothing else if you have a legit copy of Windows you can do a repair. Then your Windows update(s).  However, be forwarned if you do this you may have to reinstall some or all of your programs if the repair changes your registry.

This is not hard to do but it could take quite some time.

BTW what OS version do you have?

she has vista.

her IT guy at her work said she might have some sort of malware running keeping her from the updates

That would be my first guess also without seeing it in person.

Have her take it to work with a couple bags of Nepas Snack Sticks and jerky..

Those IT guys will be fighting each other to help fix it.   ;)

I've been using a free Anti-malware program. Seems to work well for me.

I've heard good things about that package as well.   Some of the guys at work run it on their kids computers.
