I am about to do my first briket and am going to coook at 220, should the flapper be wide open or barely open for the smoke.

Thanks

Wide open.  You want moisture to escape.

I run mine 5/8 to 3/4 open after preheating closed.   Others like to run more full open.  There should be no smoke backing up through the generator and a nice flow should come out the chimney.  I fill a large foil pan with boiling water after preheating with both the generator and heating element.  Open to the desired setting immediately after adding water to prevent interior condensation.  Advance a puck to the heating element and start smoking.

On the six rack digital I reset the timer to a new twenty minute cycle before advancing the puck to prevent a fresh puck from prematurely walking the plank to a watery grave.

Good luck and slow smoking,
