Off topic? We have members here that probably want you to burn hickory in the locomotive so they can bolt their smoker on. They would consider it "turbo mode."  :D :D :D

NH, not sure you got the answer to your question, the reason the BS does not create a smoke ring is that it burns the wood at a much lower temp than a normal fire.  The lower temp creates the smoke flavor but is not hot enough to trigger the chemical reactions in the wood that are necessary to produce the gas that creates the smoke ring.
