Hello all. First time post for me. Very cool site here. My question is that I have some fermento that is probably three years old. Kept in a cool dry place. Can it go bad or lose it's effectiveness? I hate to have to order some more cause I am ready to stuff some sticks up but don't know if I should use the old fermento.

Thanks,    John

If you kept in cool and dry and its not clumpy it is fine.

Hi JPS and welcome to the forum.

I agree with NePas... As far as I know Fermento doesn't have a specific shelf life... just as long as it's kept dry doesn't get lumpy you should be good to go!

Hi JPS;

Welcome to the forum. I agree with the others. Fermento is just a dried dairy product, specifically dried powdered buttermilk.

The stuff i have says it is not mixed with silicone dioxide an anti caking agent. It says to break it up and it is good to use.

Thanks for the quick replies and the welcome. I am glad that the fermento is good to use, as I hate to throw anything away.  :) Now to get busy.

Thanks again.   John

That is correct, dried high temp butter milk, much cheaper than fermento.
